Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 1257 PM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure builds into the Great Lakes region today lingering across the region through at least Saturday. The next low pressure system to impact the region comes Sunday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. No changes were made for the afternoon update. Forecast looks to be on track.

Original Discussion . The cold front should reach central OH into central PA by evening with high pressure ridging southward in its wake. The high pressure ridge from Canada will increase in strength through tonight with dry conditions expected tonight. Cloud cover should slowly decrease from north to south through the day with clear to mostly clears skies arriving overnight. Highs today are expected to be cooler with them ranging from the mid 60's north to the mid 70's south. Drier air and light winds tonight will allow temperatures to fall into the 40's inland. lakeshore areas should remain in the lower to mid 50's.

Ridge of high pressure takes control of the region on Wednesday. So expect dry conditions. Highs range from the mid 60's over inland NW PA to the mid 70's across NW OH and the Mid- Ohio region.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. A weak backdoor cold front will move through the eastern portion of the area on Wednesday night into Thursday, but a relative dry atmosphere should preclude much more than clouds and a slight temperature drop across the region. Otherwise, high pressure should remain across the region with a blocking low over New England, allowing for dry conditions and near seasonable temperatures through Friday night.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. The blocking pattern that will be in place across the region this week and leading to mostly dry weather will eventually breakdown this weekend. However, differences still remain on the details, especially with the upper ridge across the Great Lakes region and how quickly that will give way, which will impact precipitation timing. Overall, becoming more confident in Saturday being dry and the next chance of rain being Sunday or Monday and have bumped PoPs up slightly to have some 30 percent chances. Temperatures should remain seasonable through the weekend.

AVIATION /18Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/. A 2000 ft cloud deck is rapidly scattering out this afternoon with mostly FEW to SCT 2000 ft clouds hanging around some TAF sites through 19-20Z. Otherwise, VFR with mostly clear skies expected through the TAF period.

Northerly winds around 7-10 knots this afternoon diminish to near calm tonight, which could result in some patchy fog. Confidence wasn't high enough to add to any TAFs. Winds become light and variable during the daylight hours of Wednesday.

Outlook . Non-VFR with patchy fog may be possible Wednesday night.

MARINE. A cold front has crossed the lake this morning and high pressure will build in from the north today, allowing for mostly northeast flow across the lake. High pressure will remain over the region through Wednesday, supporting this northeast flow. A weak cold front will cross the lake on Wednesday night into Thursday, perhaps briefly increasing winds on the lake. High pressure will become centered across the lake late in the week and light flow is expected through the Saturday. At this time, no marine headlines are expected on the lake.
