AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 253 PM PDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cold front will approach the area tonight and move onshore Monday. This front will bring rain to the area, with the heaviest totals in Del Norte and northern Humboldt counties. Below normal temperatures are expected Monday and Tuesday, with a return to near normal temperatures later in the week. Frost is possible in some interior valleys Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

DISCUSSION. Coastal stratus once again blanket the coast this morning, but ceiling heights were quite a bit higher than on Saturday. The combination of a much weaker low-level inversion and increased low-level mixing has allowed much of the stratus to dissipate as of this writing, although some cloudiness lingers along the Mendocino coast.

Rain is still expected to spread into the area from the NW tonight and Monday ahead of an approaching cold front. The rainfall amount forecast remains basically unchanged, with amounts over an inch possible across the Del Norte mountains. Rainfall amounts will trail off as you go south, with only a few hundredths of an inch expected in Lake County. Instability still appears to be minimal, but have continued to include a few thunderstorms across the N coastal waters Monday night.

Cooler temperatures will accompany the front, with daytime highs falling below normal early in the coming week. There will be the potential for some patchy frost in normally colder areas of the interior by Wednesday morning (and possibly early Tuesday morning S of the lingering rain showers). Temperatures are expected to rebound late in the week. Another weak frontal system will approach the area around the Thursday time frame, but models have continued to trend drier and farther N with rain. It now appears chances for additional rains in our area on Thursday will be minimal. /SEC

AVIATION. Visible imagery from space this morning confirming a very deep marine layer with stratus extending far inland and up through the Russian River Valley. Cigs were high which has kept vsbys high as well through the morning hours Moving into the afternoon. improvement was seen around Humboldt Bay but mvfr cigs were still present at CEC. Given the approach of an upper trough expect the marine layer to mix which should help with with improving cigs overnight. However a front approaching the coast tomorrow should bring more reductions due to rain and low clouds during the afternoon.

MARINE. Light southerlies will continue across all waters tonight, with accelerated south winds around the cape, while persisting into Monday as a trough approaches the West Coast. These southerlies may flirt with low-end SCY gusts in portions of the northern outers tonight as a surface front nears. Northerlies may slowly return around Monday night after the trough passes, accelerating Tuesday afternoon south of Cape Mendocino. The current NW swell is expected to decay through Monday. A larger NW swell from a system currently intensifying in the NEPAC is expected to arrive late Monday night, with wave heights quickly building into the low teens and persisting through Tuesday, then slowly subsiding Wednesday. Seas possibly build again late this work week . as more widespread northerly winds may develop while the decaying NW swell is reinforced.

FIRE WEATHER. Ridgetop SW to W winds across our S interior ridges will become gusty late Monday, but RH values will be high. Locally poor recoveries are anticipated across the southern ridges by the latter half of the week. Gusty N to NE winds may also clip eastern Lake County late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. /SEC
