SYNOPSIS. A cold front passes through the area late tonight through early Friday and then stalls off the coast. Weak high pressure builds in behind the departing front and will remain in place through the weekend. Low pressure likely impacts the region early next week with a potential return to weak high pressure mid-week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/. The forecast is mainly on track with minor adjustments made to some of the hourly forecast elements.

Upper level closed low, currently exiting southern Michigan using water vapor imagery, will continue to move east and open up. At the surface, its associated low pressure will pass well to our north and west and drag a weak cold front through the cwa. By Friday morning the front should still be over the area, but making a mostly dry passage. Models continue to show the best chances of any precip being across northwestern locations. Have kept chance PoPs for these areas for a few hours starting around midnight.

Southerly flow will continue to strengthen this evening and overnight ahead of the frontal passage. This onshore flow, with the help of increasing clouds, will keep the area warmer tonight than the past several nights. Lows will be in the upper 50s and low 60s near the coast and in the metro area and lower to mid 50s in the interior.

SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. The cold front will slow down as it passes through the area and then stall just off the coast. Low pressure will develop along the front to our southeast. The heaviest precip from this low looks to stay well offshore and have only included slight chance PoPs over the waters. Winds become westerly during the day and then eventually N-NW by Friday night. A cooler and drier airmass will build in, with dewpoints dropping well into the 40s Friday night.

Afternoon highs will be in the lower 70s for many, likely the last time we see widespread 70 degree readings for at least the next several days. Lows Friday night drop closer to normal but still a bit above average for late October.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Upper level trough with shortwave lift combines with enough lingering moisture for low chances of showers mainly north of the city and mainly in the morning on Saturday. Synoptic scale lift will increase in the afternoon with an upper jet streak, however moisture is probably diminishing by this time. Saturday afternoon therefore is shaping up to be dry for the most part with partly to mostly cloudy conditions. We'll return to near-normal high temperatures.

The flow aloft flattens somewhat on Sunday with weak high pressure at the surface. Moisture ahead of a warm front to the SW may bring increasing cloudiness by day's end, but it probably remains rain- free.

Models still disagree with track and timing of low pressure impacting the forecast area next week. There's at least agreement that the low tracks to our south. Best estimate is that the low center emerges off the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday night into Tuesday morning. Have capped PoPs at chance from Sunday night through Tuesday night due to the low confidence in timing.

High pressure then attempts to build in from the north on Wednesday, but the storm may be slow to move farther out to sea. Have therefore kept in slight chances of showers. Another low pressure system then approaches from the west on Thursday with more showers possible as a 500mb trough shifts through the TN and OH Valleys.

High temperatures through the long term generally 60-65. Lows ranging mainly from the lower 50s in the city to the low-mid 40s in the outlying suburbs.

AVIATION /22Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. A cold front will approach from the west through this evening, then weaken as it moves across the terminals late tonight. Another cold front moves through late Friday.

S-SW winds 10-15 kt this afternoon. The winds will weaken a bit this evening and should become SW 10 kt or less with the weakening cold front. The winds continue to veer to the W-WNW Friday morning around 10 kt.

VFR. A brief shower cannot be ruled out across the Lower Hudson Valley 03-07z. Have included a VCSH at KSWF.

NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty .

Wind direction could briefly go 160-170 with sea breezes through 22z.

OUTLOOK FOR 18Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY. Friday afternoon-Sunday. VFR. Sunday Night-Tuesday. MVFR or lower possible at times. Chance of showers.

Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

MARINE. Southerly flow ahead of an approaching cold front will continue to strengthen this evening and overnight. A SCA is in effect starting this evening for the ocean waters, eastern sound and south shore bays. Winds will gust 25 to 30 kts over the ocean waters and waves will increase to 4-6 ft overnight. For the eastern sound and bays, winds will gust up to 25 kts. Winds and waves decrease throughout the day on Friday, but a SCA remains in effect over the ocean waters until 6 PM.

Weak high pressure will keep conditions below advisory-level conditions through the weekend and possibly through the daytime hours of Monday as well. Better chances of SCA conditions begin Monday night and last through Tuesday as low pressure approaches the region and tightens the pressure gradient.

HYDROLOGY. No hydrologic impacts are expected at this time.
