Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 340 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cold front exits this morning lake effect rain sets up in its wake with a much cooler airmass. Once the lake effect ends Sunday/Sunday night, high pressure over the TN Valley becomes dominant through Wednesday night with a modest warming trend. Next cold front around the Thursday time frame.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/. Rain continues to overspread the CWA under a broad area of low/mid level f-gen coupled with q vector convergence aloft in the post frontal region. This steadier rain with embedded heavier showers will continue a southwest to northeast track through the remainder of the overnight and into the morning hours before exiting to the northeast. Sharp cold air advection with dropping 850mb temperatures signals a significant change in airmass, but more importantly, a favorable setup for lake effect rain showers given the 15-18C temperature differences between the still relatively warm Lake Erie and in the incoming air at 850mb. Forecast soundings indicate instability in the form of CAPE above the near surface mixed layer to around 700mb, while the low level winds will be aligned well in a west northwesterly manner. The western zones dry out, while the far eastern zones in NE OH/NW PA get a short lived decrease in the POPs from the aforementioned exiting synoptic system and the emerging lake effect event. The thunder threat should be low, and will not carry in the grids for this portion of the forecast. However, brief heavy rain rates are possible. These POPs will linger all the way through Sunday with a slight veering of the low level wind layer to more northwesterly. Much cooler and more fall like temperatures settle in for the weekend with upper 50s to lower 60s today and mid 50s to lower 60s west on Sunday. Winds to remain gusty WNW/NW 10- 20mph sustained with 20-25mph gusts.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. By Sunday night, a lobe of jet energy will move across the eastern Great Lakes, allowing for another push of lake effect rain across NE OH and NW PA. Forecast instability in the lightning initiation zone is sufficient enough to include a slight chance of thunder, at least in the early portion of the night. Lake effect rain showers will begin diminishing in coverage by Monday morning as high pressure ridging bulges northeast into the Ohio Valley. This will usher in the return of mostly clear skies and dry weather across the region for much of Monday into Tuesday.

Low temperatures will generally drop into the low to mid 40s on Sunday and Monday nights, though some brief upper 30s are possible across the interior mid-section under clear skies and light winds.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. Much of the long term period will feature generally near normal temperatures in the 60s, though towards the end of the long term period, temperatures may dip slightly below normal into the upper 50s. Wednesday should be the most pleasant day out of the 3, with highs in the lower 70s under mostly sunny skies. Another storm system and associated cold front will move east across the Great Lakes on Thursday, resulting in the next chance for rain showers. Behind the front, below average temperatures are likely, as well as setting the stage for some lake effect rain showers.

AVIATION /06Z Saturday THROUGH Wednesday/. Low pressure moving away to the northeast will continue to drag a cold front through the region. The forecast is largely going to be characterized by primarily IFR conditions, most consistently in ceilings, but periodically in visibilities in steadier rain as well. Large swath of rain moving west to east as the system exits is up first, warranting prevailing rain and IFR ceilings, and as that exits after 15-18Z, lake effect rain showers affecting the CLE/ERI locations is expected. During this time, in the stronger winds, expect ceilings to improve to MVFR, and even VFR off to the west away from the lake effect rain, so there is an overall theme for improvement in the forecast period, with a couple already mentioned caveats.

Outlook . Non-VFR likely with periods of showers and perhaps thunderstorms through Monday morning, especially southeast of Lake Erie.

MARINE. An active marine period is expected, with Small Craft conditions lingering into Monday. West to northwest winds will begin to increase across the lake later this morning into the 20 to 25 knot range. These elevated onshore winds will persist through Sunday, before diminishing into the 15 to 20 knot range by Monday morning. Winds will further decrease into the 10 to 15 knot range by Monday night into Tuesday, becoming more southwesterly, 10 to 15 knots Tuesday night into Wednesday.

CLE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. OH . None. PA . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory from 10 AM this morning to 4 PM EDT Monday for LEZ147>149. Small Craft Advisory until 4 AM EDT Sunday for LEZ142-143. Small Craft Advisory until 4 AM EDT Monday for LEZ144>146.
