Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 218 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cold front over the central Great Lakes will move southward through the day. The front crosses lake Erie this evening, then the remainder of northern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania through Tuesday morning. High pressure ridges southward from Canada by Tuesday evening then lingers over the region into the weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. Jet energy moving through the northwesterly flow at middle levels of the atmosphere may generate a few showers over NE OH into NW PA through mid morning. Not all that much moisture to work with so have not gone with more than a slight chance mention. The atmosphere has remained fairly well mixed which has combined with passing middle and high level cloud cover to keep temperatures warmer through sunrise. Lows should range from the mid 50's to lower 60's.

Today looks to be a warm and breezy day as we watch a cold front approach the region from the central Great Lakes through the day. The daytime hours should be dry with highs ranging from the mid 70's across NW PA to the lower to mid 80's.

Tonight looks interesting with the cold front slowly sagging southward across the region overnight. Models indicate a 700 mb jet moving across Ohio in a favorable location for some additional lift. This combined with some middle level instability could produce isolated to scattered showers. The limiting factor looks to be the amount of moisture available to lift. However with the amount of middle level instability, convergence along the 850 mb front and the favorable 700 mb jet point to at least having a slight chance mention of thunder. This will need to be monitored and increased if moisture levels can increase more than current thinking. Cloud cover and enough wind to keep the low levels mixed should keep lows in the 50's to lower 60's.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. The extension of a longwave trough will be moving southeast across the area early Tuesday, with weak vorticity advection at the base of this trough. This will result in some residual showers Tuesday morning through perhaps early Tuesday afternoon, with a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Tuesday evening through Wednesday night will be relatively quiet has surface high pressure builds into the Great Lakes region. Temperatures will be right around normal.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. A relatively unchanging synoptic pattern is expected through the long term forecast with a ridge over the central CONUS and a trough over the northeast CONUS. At the surface, high pressure continues to remain over the Great Lakes region. For this reason, precipitation in not in the forecast for the entire forecast area through at least Sunday. Temperatures observe a very slight downward trend though still should remain near normal (highs in the low 70s to upper 60s).

AVIATION /06Z Monday THROUGH Friday/. VFR conditions expected through the TAF period. Low chances of a passing shower across extreme NE OH into NW PA may briefly lower ceilings to around 4000-5000 feet through 10Z. Otherwise will monitor for some low level wind shear across NW OH from 08Z to 14Z. This will all hinge on if we are able to get the low level winds to decouple. So far the atmosphere is staying fairly well mixed which has decreased the low level shear risk. So something to be aware of but have removed the mention from the western TAF sites.

Southwesterly winds remain gusty through the day with 20 to 30 knots common. Winds decrease and shift gradually to the west as a cold front moves across Lake Erie this evening. The front moves south of all TAF sites overnight with a wind shift to the north in its wake. The northerly winds look to be strongest near the south shore of the lake.

Outlook . A few lingers showers south of a Meadville to Mount Vernon line on Tuesday may produce brief non-VFR conditions.

MARINE. A warm front will move quickly move east across Lake Erie this evening. West winds will quickly increase to around 20 to 25 knots across the entire lake. For this reason, have expanded the Small Craft Advisory to the entire nearshore of Lake Erie. Wind remain at this speed through the overnight hours before diminishing from west to east during the day on Monday. Will have all Small Craft Advisories and Beach Hazard Statement over by Monday evening. A cold front will move south across the lake Monday night, with northeast winds behind the front around 15 knots. There could be a brief period of 2-4 ft waves behind the front late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with improvements to lake conditions expected Tuesday afternoon onward. High pressure builds southeast across the Great Lakes region Tuesday afternoon into WEdnesday, remaining across the region through the foreseeable future.

CLE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. OH . Beach Hazards Statement through this afternoon for OHZ012-089. PA . Beach Hazards Statement through this afternoon for PAZ001. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 4 PM EDT this afternoon for LEZ146>149. Small Craft Advisory until noon EDT today for LEZ142>145.
