Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 310 PM EDT Thu Oct 21 2021

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 310 PM EDT Thu Oct 21 2021

There will be a few lake effect rain showers downwind of Lake Michigan, especially this evening. Otherwise, mostly cloudy and cold overnight with morning lows into the middle 30s over south central Lower Michigan to the middle 40s into west central Indiana. It remains chilly on Friday with highs only into the lower to middle 50s. Widespread rain, with perhaps an embedded thunderstorm, returns for Sunday into Monday.

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Friday) Issued at 303 PM EDT Thu Oct 21 2021

Cold mid level core associated with cutoff translating eastward into southern Lake Huron by late this evening. Relaxation of pressure gradient and eastward progression to bring relatively quick end to showers across northwest CWA. Still cyclonic flow and trapped low level moisture to maintain thick cloud deck into evening, gradual breaks through overnight as dry air deepens, strong mid level height rise centroid on order of 50 m/12 hours affording increased subsidence. Despite temperatures into the middle 50s far northeast CWA/northeast Indiana, frost concern minimal with mixing through at least early morning and potentially sufficient cloud cover to disfavor frost formation. More clouds downwind of lake Michigan in aggregate troughing and lake/8H thermal differentials into the middle teens. Some degree of low level moisture remains trapped beneath strengthening subsidence inversion for Friday, again more in vicinity of southeast Lake Michigan with southern fringe of low level thermal trough holding over northern CWA.

LONG TERM. (Friday Night through Thursday) Issued at 303 PM EDT Thu Oct 21 2021

Friday night upstream shortwave through western limb of Lower Great Lakes trough. Little more than middle layer clouds anticipated with surface ridge Upper Midwest through the Tennessee Valley. All eyes on late weekend cyclone of PACNW origins. Quite strong Siberian shortwave to phase into PACNW cyclone, blocked with mid CONUS/Canadian ridge. System marches eastward through northern CONUS Tuesday through Thursday. Intense southeast Colorado/Western Plains cyclogenesis early Sunday. Eastward flank warm frontal zone along I70 corridor with ramping low/mid level moisture flux convergence into northern Indiana. Some heavy rain potential with widespread showers/embedded convection as low level jet ramps over Ohio Valley. WPC DY4-5 with large swath near 1.50 inches, isolated higher amounts in embedded convection, possible training features. Overall anticipate at a minimum considerable rises on area streams, creeks, rivers. NAEFS/GEFS do suggest lower probabilistic potential 20-40%, for greater than two inches, pointing to a non-zero potential for isolated moderate flooding on major stem rivers, especially given some moist antecedent conditions over much of the Upper Wabash and Maumee River Basins. Certainly low confidence this far out, and will maintain watch on system evolution.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday Afternoon) Issued at 139 PM EDT Thu Oct 21 2021

A cold front has been traversing west to east across the region today. Latest radar trends have shown the initial precipitation to be well east of the terminal sites. With the approach of the upper low redevelopment of shra is expected this aftn that could impact the KSBN terminal later in the aftn/evening time period. Expect MVFR cigs at KSBN through the fcst pd while beginning as MVFR at KFWA and improving to VFR after 08Z tonight. West winds gusting to 25 kts at times will turn nw this evening closer to 00Z.
