Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 948 PM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. Dry and mild weather continues overnight ahead of an approaching cold front. Scattered showers with embedded thunderstorms are likely Tuesday, especially across CT, RI and southeast MA as the cold front sweeps across the region. Dry but noticeably cooler autumn air will follow Wednesday into this weekend. The exception will be for a few spotty showers Thursday.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/.

950 PM Update .

Patchy clouds over the region, with the more extensive cloud cover over Nrn New England and Upstate NY. These clouds are along and ahead of a cold front in the St Lawrence Valley and extending to the west end of Lake Erie.

Increasing pressure gradient along the South Coast and offshore, which corresponds increased surface wind and with a low-level jet in the same area. VAD Wind Profile at OKX shows 40-45 kt winds in the lowest 4000 feet of the atmosphere. This may maintain surface gusts 30-35 kt, especially over the southern ocean.

Overall, no change to the forecast of partly cloudy skies becoming mostly cloudy with the approach of the cold front. Can't rule out a spot shower, especially over Western CT/MA overnight. Dew points 55 to 62 supports min sfc temps in the upper 50s and lower 60s, except mid to upper 60s South Coast/Islands.

Previous discussion .

High clouds streaming into SNE this evening with a gusty SW wind, especially along the coast. The wind and rising dewpoints will result in a mild night with lows only in the upper 50s to lower 60s, except mid to upper 60s southern RI and southeast MA, as dew pts rise into the lower 60s here.

Increasing winds aloft combining with warm surface temps to yield SSW winds gusting up to 25 mph. Breezy conditions persist thru the evening, then diminish overnight, as low level jet exits offshore. Party cloudy this evening, then trending mostly cloudy overnight as short wave energy and associated cold front approach from the west. Can't rule out a spot shower over western MA/CT overnight, but otherwise mainly dry weather prevails.

SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. Tuesday .

Short wave trough and associated cold front sweep across the region. Deepest moisture, best forcing and instability aligned across CT/RI and southeast MA, hence showers most widespread here, less numerous across western-central MA. Marginal instability for thunder with best SB instability farther south over the ocean, where a few strong strong may track. Given warm SST and low level shear, not out of the question of an isolated water spout offshore. Closer to shore and northward into CT/RI and southeast MA, good height falls, cooling temps aloft/steepening mid level lapse rates and strong jet dynamics with enhanced QG forcing from RRQ of upper level jet streak, may yield an isolated stronger thunderstorm. Something to watch and see how high res guid trends overnight. Brief heavy downpours as PWATs surge up to about 1.5 inches, above normal for late Sep.

Strong low level warm air advection with +18C at 925 mb streaming across CT/RI and southeast MA at 12z, then cooling off in the afternoon with the FROPA from NW to SE. This will support highs of 70-75 (warmest CT/RI/southeast MA) will be reached in the morning and early afternoon before FROPA.

Tuesday night .

Few storms tracking near Cape Cod and the Islands during the early evening hours, with low prob of a few strong storms just offshore based on HREF max updrafts and updraft helocity swaths. Then becoming post frontal all areas with wind shift to the NNE, gusting to 20-25 mph along the eastern MA coast. Dew pts tumble from 60-65 into the 40s toward sunrise Wed. Much cooler with lows 45-50, in the 50s along the coast including Boston and Providence.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. Highlights .

* Drier and much cooler Wed through the weekend * Dry conditions most of the time, but a few showers possible Thu

Wednesday .

Much cooler airmass moves into SNE as amplified trough settles in across New Eng. 850 mb temps drop to near 3C which will support highs mostly in the mid 60s, cooler higher terrain. This will be the first sub 70 degree September highs for BOS and PVD, both records for latest occurrence of sub 70 high temps. Dry conditions expected as plume of rather low PWATs move into the region. Expect plenty of sunshine but clouds will be increasing from the north during the afternoon as deeper moisture assocd with mid level low approaches from the north. The risk for showers increases Wed night as the mid level low drops south across NH/Maine with an accompanying shortwave passage and deep moisture plume rotating south across SNE.

Thursday through Monday .

Overall, a cooler fall like pattern sets up as deep and high amplitude trough sets up east of New Eng. The mid level low will gradually lift into the Maritimes Fri through the weekend but series of shortwaves rotating around will reinforce the trough east of New Eng. Most cloud cover and best chance of any showers will be on Thu as the trough and cold pool aloft moves into the Gulf of Maine. 500 mb temps -22 to -24C combined with area of deeper moisture will result in some instability showers, especially in eastern New Eng. Otherwise, expecting mostly dry conditions Fri through the weekend and possibly into Monday with dry NW flow aloft. While we can't rule out a shower each day as a few shortwaves rotate through, the majority of the time will be dry with at least partly sunny skies during the day.

Temperature wise, looking at mostly below normal temps with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s, except 50s near the coast. Coolest day will likely be on Thu under the cold pool with most cloud cover leading to highs lower 60s but possibly not getting out of the 50s over the interior high terrain.

AVIATION /02Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. Forecaster Confidence Levels.

Low - less than 30 percent. Moderate - 30 to 60 percent. High - greater than 60 percent.

Overnight .

VFR and dry weather. Marginal LLWS with 40 kt from the WSW at 3 kft through 06z, then diminishing. Southwest gusts 20-25 kt but with some gusts to 35 kt along the South Coast.

Tuesday . MVFR with showers becoming numerous after 15z across CT/RI and south of I-90, along with scattered thunderstorms. A few strong storms possible just off the south coast. Cold front/wind shift occurs 18z-00z from west to east.

Tuesday night . improving trends to VFR and drying trend as front exits the coast. Modest NNE winds 15-20 kt along eastern MA coast including Cape Cod and Islands.

KBOS Terminal . High confidence.

KBDL Terminal . High confidence.

Outlook /Wednesday through Saturday/ .

Wednesday: VFR. Breezy.

Wednesday Night through Thursday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight chance SHRA.

Thursday Night through Saturday: VFR.

MARINE. Forecaster Confidence Levels.

Low - less than 30 percent. Moderate - 30 to 60 percent. High - greater than 60 percent.

Overnight . high confidence. SW winds 15-25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt along the South Coast of MA/RI, then winds diminishing after midnight. Mainly dry and good vsby.

Tuesday . high confidence. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. SW winds shift to the NW late in the day with passage of a cold front. A few strong thunderstorms possible along and south of the islands.

Tue night . high confidence. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the early evening along with a few strong storms near the islands, then moving offshore late evening with the wind shift to the NNW, with gusts possibly up to 25 kt.

Outlook /Wednesday through Saturday/ .

Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas up to 5 ft.

Wednesday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft. Chance of rain showers.

Thursday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas up to 5 ft. Chance of rain showers.
