Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Medford OR 744 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

DISCUSSION. The Tsunami advisory for the Oregon coast is no longer in effect, but it's still in effect for California up to the Oregon Border. Even though no Tsunami advisory is in effect, rises could still be a concern and staying off beaches is still recommended.

Weatherwise, a few adjustments were made to the extent of the low clouds which from the latest satellite image is mainly confined to portions of the Umpqua Basin, but is showing signs of expanding. Patchy fog is also not our of the question where low clouds are present. The rest of the forecast for tonight is on track and other than noted above, no changes are needed. See previous discussion for details on the weather for Sunday into next week. -Petrucelli

AVIATION. 16/00Z TAFs . VFR conditions will prevail initially, then areas of IFR cigs/vsbys in low clouds and fog/freezing fog will develop over the inland valleys, especially west of the Cascades, late tonight. The lower conditions will clear to VFR by Sunday afternoon. VFR conditions will then prevail into Sunday evening.

MARINE. Updated 800 PM PST Saturday 15 January 2022 . A tsunami advisory remains in effect, although wave activity appears to have peaked earlier this afternoon. A thermal trough near the coast will weaken tonight. Until then, west swell will combine with wind driven waves to create steep seas over the area. Winds and seas will diminish later tonight. A weak front will move onshore Tuesday. Winds ahead of the front will be light, then north winds will increase again behind the front Tuesday night into Wednesday. Winds and seas will likely remain below Small Craft Advisory conditions Sunday through Thursday.

PREV DISCUSSION. /Issued 229 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022/

DISCUSSION . The main concern for today has been the Tsunami Advisory from the volcanic eruption near Tonga. The subsequent distantly generated Tsunami brought advisory level rises to the coast, ranging from 0.8 ft at Charleston, 1.5 ft at Port Orford, and up to 3.7 ft at Crescent City. The waves look to have peaked, but the the more persistent action with a volcanic eruption, compared to an earthquake, rises could continue into the evening and staying off the beaches is still recommended.

The Rex block that has kept the region under a very stable ridge pattern with very little mixing in the valleys across the region continues. Models remain in good agreement with the upper low over southern California filling and the remaining upper trough shifting east Monday evening ahead of a weak front that will move through, brining generally light precipitation to mostly from the Cascades westward in Oregon. This front also will likely bring some mixing to the valleys that will bring a break in the stagnant pattern. The upper ridge then builds back in Wednesday, and though a front moves over the ridge, precipitation should be confined to the northern fringes of the forecast area.

Model then greatly diverge as we head towards next weekend with the greatest amount of model members showing a return to a stagnant ridge pattern.

MFR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. OR . Air Stagnation Advisory until noon PST Monday for ORZ029>031. Air Stagnation Advisory until noon PST Monday for ORZ023-024-026.

CA . Air Stagnation Advisory until noon PST Monday for CAZ080>085.

Pacific Coastal Waters . Small Craft Advisory until 4 AM PST Sunday for PZZ350-356-370-376.
