Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 300 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 300 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

Lake effect snow showers will continue to taper off into this evening with dry, cold and mainly sunny conditions tomorrow. Below normal temperatures will continue into this weekend with a chance for snow Sunday into early next week.

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Friday) Issued at 300 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

Lake effect snow showers and flurries near Lake MI will lose its inland reach tonight into early Friday as northwest flow in the boundary layer wanes in response to a low level ridge building in. Some very light additional accums remain possible in mainly LaPorte and Berrien Counties where the Winter Wx Advisory will be allowed to expire by 23z. The building sfc high will provide quiet weather otherwise through Friday night with lows tonight into the single digits for many locations.

LONG TERM. (Friday Night through Thursday) Issued at 300 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

Eastern conus longwave trough will persist this weekend into next week downstream of a West Coast +PNA ridge. This regime will lead to below normal temps through the long term period, and a parade of clipper-like systems this weekend into early next week.

Saturday's mid level wave will take a more northerly track with a low chance for snow showers across far northern zones. Models are in good agreement on a true clipper to follow through on Sunday with some light synoptic snow accums expected. The placement of this narrow nw to se oriented snow band (1-2") is still of lower confidence at this fcst range. Opted to hold with broadbrush chance PoPs for now as a result, highest in the morning.

Confidence rapidly diminishes with the hybrid clipper to follow early next week. This northern stream wave will have some pacific moisture work, with a separate leftover closed low over the Four Corners likely ejecting east-northeast through the TN/OH Valleys by around Tuesday. It would fit the trend this winter if fgen/WAA snow passes north (or clips our far northern zones) and deeper moisture with the southern stream waves gets sheared well south . keeping the snow drought going. This is actually the model consensus at this time, but still worth monitoring going forward given all the moving parts and large spread in solutions.

The middle of next week will feature a healthy shot of cold air behind the Mon-Tue system with lake effect snow likely in favored NNW flow belts.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday Afternoon) Issued at 1214 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

Dominant lake induced single band had broken up into cellular snow showers this afternoon which will persist into this evening invof KSBN. Some diurnal heating should enhance things early on before flow backs through evening and snow bands retreat back across the lake. VFR expected outside brief/transient snow showers otherwise.

IWX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. IN . Winter Weather Advisory until 5 PM CST this afternoon for INZ003.

MI . Winter Weather Advisory until 6 PM EST this evening for MIZ077.

OH . NONE. LM . Small Craft Advisory until 10 PM EST this evening for LMZ043-046.
