Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 733 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 343 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

A period of rain showers is expected this evening into the overnight as another cold front tracks across the area. This front will be fast moving and rain should end from west to east late tonight into Saturday morning. Cooler weather will settle in for Saturday with high temperatures from the mid 60s to low 70s. A warming trend will follow for the second half of the weekend into early next week. Mainly dry conditions are expected for next week.

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Saturday) Issued at 343 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

An upper level trough continues to strengthen today as a strong upper level jet streak (120+ knots) sampled by Glasgow, MT morning RAOB continues to dig through the base of this trough. Post-frontal band of rain has already formed from southeast Minnesota into central Iowa. Some additional showers have formed across eastern Iowa in strong pre-frontal low and mid level positive theta-e advection zone. Have not made substantial changes from previous forecast in timing rain chances tonight with the front, with the main question on PoPs this evening and timing pre-frontal chances. There could be just enough moisture advection in the 850-700 mb layer to realize some light rain showers preceding main rain band overnight and will cover these with just some slight chance PoPs late evening for now.

An axis of mid/upper level frontogenesis forcing should continue to strengthen through the evening/early overnight. Combination of this deep frontal forcing and good upper dynamics will support band of rain moving across the region from late evening to early Saturday morning following the frontal progression. Thunder prospects still look minimal, with the best chance of an isolated thunderstorm in vicinity of Lake Michigan where some lake enhancement to instability is possible. Will maintain idea of previous forecast with rainfall amounts ranging from a tenth to three tenths of an inch through early Saturday morning.

Deep layer subsidence will build in Saturday with mainly sunny skies and cooler highs from28 the mid 60s northeast to low 70s far southwest.

LONG TERM. (Saturday Night through Friday) Issued at 343 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

Low level thermal trough will shift east of the area on Sunday allowing for the onset of a warming trend that will continue into Monday. Southeast sagging low level anticyclone and lee troughing will allow low level height gradient to tighten again Sunday with breezy/windy conditions once again. Northern tier short wave should try to drive another low level cool front across the Great Lakes region Sunday night into Monday, but there does not appear much impetus for significant intrusion of cooler air as far south as the local area. It is possible a few showers could accompany this front across southern Lower Michigan during this time period, but will opt to continue to a dry forecast at this time.

Much of the remainder of the long term period looks to be uneventful, with the main uncertainty still centering on temperature trends. Medium range guidance still in good agreement in terms of the nature of large scale flow evolution to a more amplified, stable wave pattern. However, minor differences in placement of trough/ridge axes in this longwave pattern evolution will have a strong influence on temperatures. Will not stray far from previous forecast thinking/consensus long term guidance of ridge axis being far enough east to support temperatures at or above normal for much of the Tue-Fri period. Confidence in dry forecast through this period still remains high.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday Evening) Issued at 731 PM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

A cold front approaches with a chance for scattered showers tonight into early tomorrow for FWA. The main impact to terminals would be a brief drop into MVFR conditions as the front moves through. Veering winds from southwest to west will occur as the front moves through with gusts up to between 25 and 30 kts possible mainly at SBN and lesser so at FWA. Then the clouds break up behind the front and VFR conditions continue Saturday.

MI . Beach Hazards Statement through Saturday afternoon for MIZ077.
