Waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will occasionally be encountered. .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure around 29.4 inches over western Lake Superior will continue to move east across the lake overnight and into eastern Ontario. Gusty southwest winds will continue this evening, then veer west to northwest with the passage of an Arctic cold front. A Gale Warning remains in effect for the Lake Michigan open waters overnight and across the northern half of the lake through Wednesday morning, for Gale force gusts of 35 to 40 knots. Arctic high pressure around 30.7 inches will then move from the northern Plains into the Great Lakes Region later in the week. Cold air behind the passing Arctic front will increase the threat for freezing spray. The winds will diminish Wednesday night into Thursday as the high pressure area sags south across the central U.S. The next chance for strong winds across Lake Michigan will be Friday night into Saturday as another cold front passes through the western Great Lakes. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 1226 AM EST Wed Jan 19 2022

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 327 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

Lake effect snow showers are expected to develop by early Wednesday night. The snow is likely to persist through Thursday and bring locally heavy snow near the lake in Berrien and Laporte counties. Temperatures will turn colder Wednesday and stay cold with additional arctic intrusions accompanied by lake effect snow through the middle of next week.

UPDATE. Issued at 856 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

A strong low level jet has become established across the Mid MS Valley/southern Great Lakes region this evening, with KIWX radar VAD wind profile depicting 50 knots of south-southwest flow at 3000 feet. Strengthening low level pre-frontal gradient has allowed for sporadic southerly gusts to around 30 mph this evening despite some weak decoupling, and would expect these gusts to continue through the remainder of the evening. Sfc cold frontal boundary is in vicinity of the MS River across eastern Iowa/northwest Illinois as of 02Z and this front should reach northwest portions of forecast area across NW Indiana around 09Z.

Pre-frontal forcing and modest low level moisture transport could support some low cloud development ahead of the cold front with potential of some patchy drizzle overnight. Some steeper mid level lapse rates will also advect across southern Lower Michigan/northern Indiana late evening/overnight. These steeper lapse rates coupled with some elevated moisture return could be enough to generate a few light showers/sprinkles across the north overnight, but lack of moisture in 850-650 mb layer leads to low confidence in this scenario. Will not deviate much from previous forecast in maintaining just 20 PoPs for measurable precip remainder of the night. Cold front will bring wind shift to the west-northwest late tonight/early Wed morning. Some strong post- frontal gusts in excess of 40 mph are occurring this evening across southern MN/northern IA, but would expect as sfc cyclone begins to fill across the northern Great Lakes overnight and isallobaric contribution wanes with eastward extent, these gusts will be more in the 20 to 30 mph range locally late tonight. Overall not much change made to previous forecast with just some slight adjustment to hourly temps to account for nearly steady temp trend ahead of the cold front.

SHORT TERM. (This Evening through Thursday) Issued at 327 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

It appears the potential for a more significant lake effect snow event is unfolding for Wednesday night through Thursday. Have made extensive coordination with the Chicago and Grand Rapids offices as well as the Weather Prediction Center in references to snowfall amounts and possible winter headlines over Berrien and Laporte counties. Have decided to issue a watch for these areas near Lake Michigan for lake effect snow given several favorable parameters including clouds well in Dendritic Growth Zone, delta T's 19-22C, snowshowers forming along the long axis of Lake Mich with probable preconditioning from Lake Superior, limited shear, and fairly mild water temps for this time of year (+4 to +5C). It does look like some support from the right entrance region of the upper jet; EL heights may be a limiting factor with more shallow cloud tops (at least initially). Feel moderate confidence in a single band with main impacts within 20 miles of Lake Michigan with snow totals possibly reaching 5-7 inches. On the downside, the band (possibly bands) may be more transitive and may not stay in any one place for very long (rendering lower snow accumulations).

LONG TERM. (Thursday Night through Tuesday) Issued at 327 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

Continued cold conditions with more arctic air intrusions. After the one Wednesday, there will be a second arctic front passage about Saturday noon and then another one next week Tuesday. The coldest air should be over the area next Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lake effect snow is likely at times with the cold air. Temperatures may dip below zero next week Tuesday night.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday Night) Issued at 1225 AM EST Wed Jan 19 2022

Delayed onset of low end MVFR ceilings this morning with low level saturation lagged a few hours behind cold front and magnitude of dry airmass in advance of front. Afforded slight improvement above fueling/alternate with mixing by midday. Focus now shifting on developing lake effect snowstorm across southwest Lower Michigan into northwest IN. Models indicate potential for heavy lake effect snowband into KSBN late in forecast period and persisting beyond. Northerly fetch, favorable lift and super- saturation within the dendritic growth zone favor IFR, potentially LIFR in center of bands. Fetch and generalized subsidence outside of lake effect with significantly better conditions at KFWA.
