Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Northern Indiana 139 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 138 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Bands of rain showers, along with gusty winds, will subside through this afternoon. It will remain cold by late September standards through tonight, with much warmer, closer to normal temperatures arriving for Friday as the area sees the return of sunshine.

UPDATE. Issued at 1123 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Two distinct areas of better rain coverage late this morning, one associated with TROWAL/lake enhancement across NW Indiana/SW Lower Michigan and secondary area across south central Lower Michigan in closer proximity to upper level low and a stronger short wave rotating through parent circulation. Best rain amounts through early afternoon will likely be tied to these slower moving/training echoes near the upper level low across south central Lower Michigan. In between these areas, weaker upper forcing and narrow corridor of DNVA has limited precip. Through the afternoon should tend to see stronger low level baroclinic zone across NW IN/SW Lower MI shift eastward which should tend to allow for scattered shower development in areas currently experiencing dry conditions. Slight modifications made to current PoPs to account for observational/expected near term trends, but otherwise no changes of substance to previous forecast at this time.

SHORT TERM. (Today) Issued at 345 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Upper low over the Toledo area continues to slowly drift northward sending associated trowal/deformation axis into south-central and SW MI. We continue to grind out some impressive storm-total rainfall amounts in our eastern zones (around 6" in spots) but rainfall rates overnight have generally been 0.3"/hr or less and ground seems to be absorbing it with little impact. Precip rates and coverage will continue to slowly taper off through the morning hours as this system begins to fill and better forcing for ascent lifts north. Given lack of impacts thus far and axis of heaviest rain now shifting out of the flood watch area . will go ahead and cancel the watch now. Hi-res guidance suggests rain tapering off rapidly 09-12Z so no need to continue it through then. Do still expect some lake- enhanced showers to persist in NW zones through late afternoon . potentially infiltrating well into our central CWA given strong flow aloft. Any additional rain with this activity will be generally light and falling in the area that received comparatively little rain so far so no significant concerns.

Winds will be breezy at times through much of today. Gradient remains tight and forecast soundings indicate better mixing potential as winds back NW and drier air starts to advect into the area. Momentum transfer suggests peak gusts in the 35-40 mph range, particularly during late morning as mixing commences and gradient is still tight. Not quite worthy of an advisory but something to note. Another raw day with temps likely struggling to reach 60F, particularly in our NE counties.

LONG TERM. (Tonight through Wednesday) Issued at 345 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Things finally quiet down tonight as weakening low heads toward Georgian Bay. Steady gradient wind and slow exit of clouds will keep overnight lows in check. Still anticipate mid 40s. Sunny skies and moderating temps expected for Friday with WAA ramping up ahead of next trough/cold front. Anticipate a large diurnal swing with highs in low/mid 70s.

Still some minor timing discrepancies but next cold front crosses Fri night/early Sat. Strong height falls/CVA associated with the front so precip appears likely. Instability is significantly lacking though and will hold off on any thunder mention once again. This coupled with fast frontal passage will keep QPF in check (a few tenths to perhaps 0.5"). Saturday night will be another cool one but appears to be enough of a gradient and some cloud potential to keep lows in mid/upper 40s. Primarily quiet weather anticipated next week but there are still some substantial differences in evolving longwave pattern which leads to lower than normal confidence in temp forecast, especially by the middle to end of next week.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday Afternoon) Issued at 133 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Bands of showers that have been periodically impacting KSBN with lower vsby and cigs will quickly fall apart this afternoon with VFR conditions to take hold by late afternoon and continue thereafter. A few sprinkles/light showers may briefly impact KFWA, but VFR conditions should prevail as well (outside maybe a brief drop to MVFR with any showers). Winds will slowly diminish through the remainder of the day as low pressure continues to move NE away from the area.
