Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 734 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Low pressure trough will linger over Lake Erie tonight. High pressure will build quickly northeast across the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys Friday. A cold front will move east across the area Saturday. High pressure will build east across the Ohio and Tennessee Valley again Saturday night and Sunday with a ridge extending north over the local area. A warm front will move northeast across the area Monday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. An upper-level cutoff low will continue to move northward across the Great Lakes region tonight before getting embedded within southerly flow and quickly advected northward away from our area as a longwave trough. There will be very brief upper-level ridging before yet another upper-level trough approaches the area late Friday night. Low-level moisture from the cutoff low will continue to influence the area in the form of isolated to scattered light showers/drizzle this evening. Precipitation chances decrease tonight as the upper-level low distances itself from our area. A surface trough lingers across Lake Erie tonight through late Friday morning. Cold air over a warm Lake Erie (with water temperatures around 70 F) should provide shallow but sufficient instability, resulting in a band of showers over Lake Erie that may move onshore across northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania late tonight into early Friday morning. Friday night should be precipitation-free. Friday and Friday night will be quite a bit warmer than yesterday, though still a few degrees below normal, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. The next system will approach on Saturday. A quick-moving cold front will march west to east across the area, bringing with it the chance for a quick-shot of scattered to widespread [precipitation. Thunderstorms should accompany some of the heavier rain showers given the amount of instability in the 0 to -20C layer. Not anticipating too much in the way of QPF with the fast-moving system, with most places forecast receiving around 0.10 to 0.20 inches of rainfall. Widespread cloud cover will accompany the fast-moving system, so high temperatures may only reach the upper 60s. By Saturday night into Sunday morning, rain showers, and perhaps a rumble of thunder or two, could persist across far NE OH into NW PA with decent low-level moisture support, aided by a warm lake and cool temperatures aloft. Lows will reach the mid to upper 40s with lower 50s closer to the lakeshore.

Sunday will be dry for the most part across the area with mostly sunny skies and highs around 70 as high pressure ridging extends north across the Ohio Valley. Lows on Sunday will bottom out in the lower 50s.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. A weak surface trough may graze far NE OH into NW PA Monday morning, but not anticipating anything more than isolated shower activity at this time. Otherwise, Monday should be a relatively pleasant weather day with partly cloudy skies and highs reaching the mid to upper 70s in most spots. Cooler lower 70s or perhaps upper 60s could be possible across NW PA with any clouds and/or showers.

By Tuesday, the next system may arrive as an upper trough descends south across Ontario and eastern Great Lakes. At this time, the best chance for any scattered-like rain activity would be across the far southeast portion of the region. Highs will reach the mid to upper 70s. Behind this system, Wednesday and Thursday both look to be pleasant weather days as high pressure sets in across the area. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70s.

AVIATION /00Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/. Upper level low continues to slowly drift north with a well pronounced counterclockwise circulation. Abundant low level moisture and cloud cover has dominated as a result, although at the time of this issuance, ceilings continue a slow lift and should see coverage start to scatter out during the overnight hours as the southern edge of the system moves northward through Ohio. Until then, will continue to hang on to some MVFR ceilings at a few terminals. Lakeshore terminals may see a brief passing shower at CLE/ERI through much of the period, and will carry this in prevailing at ERI 10-13Z, although this timing may vary slightly. Wind gusts continue 20-30kts into Friday, but skies slowly clear by the end of the forecast period in most cases.

Outlook . Non-VFR possible with rain showers late Friday night through late Saturday night.

MARINE. South to southwest winds persist, 20 to 25 knots, across the lake this afternoon. Generally west to southwest winds will persist across the lake tonight into Friday morning, before slowly decreasing from west to east. Winds may have a slightly more westerly component by Friday afternoon, around 20 knots, and therefore have issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Lake/Ashtabula/Erie for much of the day Friday. West to southwest winds will further decrease into the 10 to 15 knot range by Friday evening, and therefore will let the Small Crafts across the eastern basin of the lake expire at that time. Southwest winds, 15 to 20 knots, are possible ahead of a cold front on Saturday, shifting more westerly Saturday night into Sunday behind the front. Westerly winds may briefly reach closer to 20 to 25 knots Sunday afternoon, and a Small Craft Advisory may be needed for the eastern basin of the lake. Following this, generally southwest winds of 10 to 15 knots are anticipated and no additional marine headlines are expected.

CLE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. OH . Beach Hazards Statement from 4 AM EDT Friday through Friday evening for OHZ012-089. PA . Beach Hazards Statement from 4 AM EDT Friday through Friday evening for PAZ001. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 10 PM EDT Friday for LEZ147>149. Small Craft Advisory until 10 AM EDT Friday for LEZ142>145. Small Craft Advisory until 4 PM EDT Friday for LEZ146.
