Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 1001 PM EDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure south of New England brings mainly dry and warm conditions Monday, then a few showers or a thunderstorm is possible late Monday night into Tuesday as a cold front sweeps through. A drier and much cooler airmass will follow Wednesday into the weekend, but a few showers are possible Thursday as a disturbance moves through.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/. 10PM Update .

Temperatures continue to fall from the low-60s into the 50s this evening. During this update the only changes [which were minor] were done on the temperature and wind. Temperatures have been cooling off a little quicker and with clear skies and light winds I've brought temperature down by 1-2 degrees. This is still warmer than the coolest guidance. Additionally, winds have been fairly light at 5 knots or less. I did bring the winds more in line with those current conditions. Otherwise the forecast remains on track.

Previous discussion .

High pres builds over mid Atlc region tonight. Dry westerly flow will result in mainly clear skies and cool conditions, although some clouds will be moving in from the west ahead of a weak shortwave. Lows will range from upper 40s to mid 50s.

SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT/. Monday .

A period of clouds expected to move across western and northern MA in the morning as a weak shortwave moves through. Decent moisture advection and weakening stability at the nose of a modest low level jet may result in a brief morning shower, mainly over higher elevations. Otherwise, partly to mostly sunny skies expected. Increasing SW flow brings milder air aloft with 925 mb temps warming to 16-17C. Highs should reach mid/upper 70s, but cooler higher terrain. It will also become breezy in the afternoon with SW gusts 20-30 mph, strongest over Cape/Islands.

Monday night .

Cold front drops south across northern New England with a plume of higher theta-e air and decreasing stability to the south moving across SNE. A few showers are possible overnight ahead of the front and can't rule out an isolated t-storm. It will be a milder night due to more cloud cover and SW flow. Lows will range from the upper 50s in NW MA to the mid 60s near the south coast. Breezy conditions will persist over the Cape/Islands.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Highlights .

* Scattered showers and thunderstorms possible Tuesday

* Cold front Tuesday ushers in a drier and much cooler airmass for Wednesday into the weekend.

Tuesday

Robust 115 kt jet at 250 hPa digs an upper-level trough over the northeast on Tuesday. This will be associated with strong CAA at 850 hPa and a cold frontal passage at the surface Tuesday afternoon. Height falls are modest, and thus forcing for ascent associated with this front is modest as well. However, with PWATs in the 1.25- 1.5" inch range there will be a shot at some scattered showers across southern New England, mainly south of I-90. There will be a chance for some thunderstorms depending on the timing of the frontal passage. As of now it looks like the front will be moving through Tuesday afternoon when 200-300 J/kg of MLCAPE is forecast for areas south of I-90. Furthermore, deep layer shear values around 35 knots could support thunderstorm development as well. Models are in general agreement that this front and associated precipitation will be clear of southern New England by late Tuesday night.

Wednesday through next weekend.

Strong cold air advection and deep north/northwesterly flow behind Tuesday's cold front will usher cooler/drier air into southern New England. This will have the area feeling much more like fall with daily high/low temperatures in the mid 60s/upper 40s respectively. Expect these conditions to persist through the weekend as an upper- level low and deep north/northwest flow will meander over the northeast for an extended period of time. This will be due to a blocking area of high pressure over the mid-Atlantic. There will be a chance for some isolated to scattered showers along the east-coast on Thursday as an area of low pressures passes well to our northeast.
