SHORT TERM. (Issued 302 AM CST Sun Jan 16 2022)

Today through Monday:

Satellite imagery this morning shows some lingering cloud cover along the lake shore with winds over Lake Michigan mainly out of the south. Could see a few flurries right along the lake shore. Temps may have bottomed out for today as we should start to see increasing S/SW winds ahead of our quick moving system today. Water vapor imagery indicates this shortwave is moving into the Dakotas early this morning and will drop S/SE through the area this afternoon and evening. A few of the 00z hires models suggested some drier air may work into the mid levels and could limit precip chances but based on satellite imagery think that is a little over done. We should see a quick band of light snow move from NW to SE this afternoon ahead of the trough. Any accumulations will range from a trace to a couple tenths of an inch of snow. Clouds will linger behind this system and help to keep temps in the teens for Monday morning. High pressure briefly passes to the south Monday afternoon so we should start the day breezy but winds decrease through the day.

LONG TERM. (Issued 302 AM CST Sun Jan 16 2022)

Monday night through Saturday:

Temperatures through Tuesday night stay near normal as winds remain out of the S/SW. But a strong system passing well to the north on Tuesday will send a cold front through the area Tuesday night. Models have backed off on the southern extent of QPF with this system on Tuesday and only the northern portions of the area may see some light snow. Arctic air will spill south Tuesday night through Wednesday and it's likely the high temp for Wednesday will actually occur in the early morning hours. Temps fall through the day and afternoon values will only be in the teens. Lows Wednesday night range from single digits above near the lake to single digits below zero elsewhere. Winds will remain breezy behind this system and this looks to result in wind chill values hitting advisory criteria for Thursday morning. High pressure moves overhead on Thursday but highs may not make out of the single digits. Radiational cooling Thursday night will push temps a little colder but with little to no winds we may come close to wind chill advisory criteria again.

The pattern becomes a little more uncertain heading into the weekend with some solutions showing additional rounds of Arctic air over the weekend. Others keep a slightly more active pattern in place and this could shunt the southward extent of the Arctic air. Still looks to be a below normal pattern but just how far below normal remains to be seen.

AVIATION. (Issued 302 AM CST Sun Jan 16 2022)

South to southeast this morning looks to bring some of the MVFR clouds over Lake Michigan into the lakeshore terminals. Winds start to become more southwesterly this morning and we should see a period of VFR cigs until this afternoon. A system moves across the area later today and will bring a quick burst of light snow. Cigs fall to MVFR ahead of the snow and should hold at MVFR into Monday morning. Winds switch from the south to northwest behind the front and could see some gusts to 20 kts tonight into Monday morning.

MARINE. (Issued 302 AM CST Sun Jan 16 2022)

Winds become more southwesterly today ahead of a quick moving system. A cold front pushes through this afternoon switching winds to the northwest. Gusts ramp up tonight into Monday morning with gusts of 25 to 28 kts. High pressure briefly moves overhead Monday night into Tuesday before a stronger system moves to the north on Tuesday. Expect a period of near gale force winds in the nearshore Tuesday through Wednesday. Gusts to gale force are expected over the open waters.
