Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 250 PM CDT Mon Oct 18 2021

SHORT TERM. (Issued 249 PM CDT Mon Oct 18 2021)

Tonight through Tuesday night:

Tonight will be another clear and calm night thanks to high pressure overhead. However, low temperatures will be in the 40s rather than 30s, so we do not have patchy frost concerns. Winds will pick up quickly on Tuesday out of the southwest as low pressure approaches from the Plains. Wind gusts up to 20-25 mph are expected. We should see some mid level clouds begin to stream overhead Tuesday afternoon as well. High temperatures Tuesday will be similar or just a notch warmer than the highs today, in the lower 70s. Winds will drop off again Tuesday night, but lows will be in the upper 40s to around 50.

LONG TERM. (Issued 249 PM CDT Mon Oct 18 2021)

Wednesday through Monday:

Low pressure over Nebraska Tuesday evening will reach southeast MN/ northeast IA early Wednesday evening. The occluding system associated with a closed upper low will have some showers and isolated thunderstorms out ahead of it in the warm air advection. Shower chances will begin in southern WI Wednesday morning, with likely showers and a few rumbles of thunder Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The low is expected to track straight across central or southern WI. The deterministic GFS is a little further north than the ECMWF. Precip amounts do not look very high for this event, with up to a quarter inch toward central WI in the forecast for now. The closer to the northern edge of the low, the higher the precip amounts.

Gusty northerly winds will usher colder air into southern WI Thursday night. How cold we can get depends on wind speed and how quickly the skies can clear. Right now it looks like coldest temps will be toward the Dells and Marquette/Green Lake counties Thu nt and this area could see widespread frost.

Cyclonic flow will hang around the Great Lakes region Friday through Sunday, so we will see rounds of clouds and pushes of cold temps. Most people should see at least patchy frost and some people will have a freeze by the end of the weekend. Keep up with the forecasts if you are still concerned about any sensitive vegetation.

Some snow showers actually showed up in the forecast for Day 6/7 (Sunday night into Monday). This forecast is misleading because if we actually get precip, it would be due to warm air advection, and our temperatures would be warming as the precip arrives. Timing of the precip is uncertain, and so are the low temps. Therefore, do not get excited about any snow chances.

AVIATION. (Issued 249 PM CDT Mon Oct 18 2021)

VFR conditions will prevail through Tuesday with high pressure overhead. Look for increasing south-southwest winds this afternoon and gusty southwest winds on Tuesday due to approaching low pressure.

Cronce

MARINE. (Issued 249 PM CDT Mon Oct 18 2021)

Look for increasing southerly winds tonight through Tuesday evening as low pressure approaches from the Plains. Wind gusts are expected to remain below 25 kt for the Nearshore areas of southeast WI. Low pressure will track across central Lake Michigan Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Gusty northerly winds will develop on the back side of the low Thursday afternoon and night. A few gale force gusts are possible for the north half open Lake Michigan.
