SHORT TERM. (Issued 245 AM CST Fri Jan 28 2022)

Today through Saturday:

Monitoring lake effect snow shower activity. Plenty of this upstream tracking south/southwest. Main focus across northeast IL. There is still some low level convergence in our far southeast, especially south of KMKE looks favorable through around 15z or so. May bump up pops a bit to account for the ongoing trends and blend with KLOT though tight gradient. At this point still appears that we would be more brushed by these shsn rather than have any primary band swing onshore but it'll be a close call. Low level flow within the column becomes more decidedly northwest later this morning which should maintain/reinforce the focus to our south and southeast. Otherwise positive tilt mid/upper trough axis pulls east today and sets up a broad northwest anticyclonic flow regime right into Saturday. Surface ridge axis slides overhead tonight and then shifts to our east for Saturday. So a a return southerly flow sets up. Will keep any waa induced shsn to our north and northeast but will likely have a good deal of cloud cover.

LONG TERM. (Issued 245 AM CST Fri Jan 28 2022)

Saturday night through Thursday:

Cold northwest flow will persist through the weekend. A passing wave may bring a few snow showers to central Wisconsin Saturday night and early Sunday morning, but otherwise dry conditions are expected through at least Monday morning. Lows Saturday night and Sunday night will be in the low teens, with highs on Sunday reaching the mid 20s.

Southerly flow kicks in for Monday as the upper level flow becomes more zonal. Will need to watch for some light warm advection snow for later Monday, especially over central Wisconsin. Highs Monday are expected to warm to around freezing.

Warm advection continues into Tuesday, before a strong cold front passes through Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures look to reach the mid 30s on Tuesday before the frontal passage, though that will certainly be dependent on the exact timing of the front. Once the front passes through, temperatures will fall rather quickly back into the 20s.

Attention then turns to a storm system that appears increasingly likely to affect portions of the Midwest sometime in the Tuesday night to Thursday night timeframe. Deterministic guidance has seemingly shifted south over the last 24-36 hours, but a close look at the respective ensemble members gives a clear picture of the significant uncertainty at this distance. Solutions include a swath of heavy snow north of the area, south of the area, across the area, or not at all! Bottom line, this is definitely a time period to keep an eye on, but given that we're still the better part of 5-6 days out, it would be unwise to latch onto any particular details at this juncture.

AVIATION. (Issued 245 AM CST Fri Jan 28 2022)

Surface high centered vcnty northwest IA will continue to slide southeast this period with the ridge axis across the area tonight. Lingering onshore flow may lead to some shsn brushing the shore esp for areas south of KMKE. This potential should ease later this morning into the afternoon. Otherwise the high will shift east for Saturday setting up a return flow. May see a good deal of cloud cover with the waa but expecting any precip with that to be more confined to our north or northeast.

MARINE. (Issued 245 AM CST Fri Jan 28 2022)

Will let going small craft expire naturally at 12z as waves expected to subside below criteria. otherwise high pressure builds in through tonight. The high shifts east on Saturday setting up a southerly flow. A cold front will then pass Saturday night which will shift winds more to the northwest for Sunday.
