Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Binghamton NY Issued by National Weather Service State College PA 255 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather will continue through most of Friday, as an area of high pressure moves eastward off the coast. A slow moving storm system will bring rain from late Friday through the first part of the weekend. Our weather should slowly dry out Sunday and Monday, as weak high pressure briefly builds in.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. 240 pm update . Thin, high level clouds are gradually approaching from the southwest late this afternoon, but otherwise a sunny, pleasant day is winding down.

Tonight, as a SE low-level jet develops just above the surface, lower clouds should come inland from the western Atlantic and push into NEPA and portions of NY's southern tier. This likely won't happen until later this evening and during the overnight hours, with skies still clear-partly cloudy early in the evening. Across the northern Finger Lakes and our Lake Ontario plain areas up north, skies will stay partly cloudy all night.

Lows by daybreak will drop into the mid 30s from the Mohawk Valley down into the western Catskills, and should range from the upper 30s-mid 40s elsewhere.

SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. 250 pm update . On Friday, after perhaps a few peaks of early morning sunshine in spots, clouds will lower and thicken area- wide, as a moist E-SE flow prevails in the lower levels of the atmosphere, and mid to higher-level moisture also overruns the region.

A band of steady rain will be slowly approaching the Finger Lakes region and NEPA during the afternoon hours. However, most areas north and east of a Penn Yan-Ithaca-Binghamton-Honesdale line are likely to stay dry during the daylight hours. Afternoon highs will range from the upper 40s over some of the higher terrain, to the upper 50s near Syracuse and in portions of the Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys.

Friday night and Saturday still look wet, as a closed upper- level low approaches from the southwest and surface waves move by to the south of CNY/NEPA. The steadiest rain should fall Friday night into early Saturday, with more showery conditions by Saturday afternoon. From this early vantage point, most model solutions would give the majority of the region from about 0.5 to 1 inch of rain, with locally higher amounts from sections of Bradford county, PA into portions of the Finger Lakes and central southern tier regions in NY.

Clouds and steady precipitation should keep lows Friday night mostly in the 40s, with daytime highs Saturday generally in the 50s, perhaps reaching the lower 60s in some of the valleys of NEPA.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/. 12 noon update . The latest suite of ensemble guidance agrees fairly well in the big picture into next week. This pattern will feature a departing/opening up short-wave later this weekend, followed by generally fast cyclonic westerly flow next week.

As for the sensible weather, fairly numerous showers Saturday night should diminish in coverage on Sunday, with mostly dry weather foreseen later Sunday into Monday, as surface ridging briefly builds into CNY/NEPA. Thereafter, conditions may become more showery again for the mid-week period, especially over the higher terrain of CNY, as heights aloft fall again owing to a digging trough over southeastern Canada. Temperatures may well cool enough by the middle of next week for a mixture of rain and wet snow showers, especially at night and over the higher terrain.

Highs on Sunday should range from the lower 50s over the higher elevations, to the lower 60s in the normally milder, more urbanized valleys of the Finger Lakes region and NEPA. As mentioned earlier, readings will trend chillier next week, and by mid-week we should see highs mainly in the 40s, with perhaps some lower 50s in the valleys of NEPA. Nighttime lows will be mostly in the 30s.

AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. 18Z update . VFR/unrestricted conditions will continue area- wide into the evening hours.

Later tonight, owing to a strengthening SE low-level jet just above the surface, lower clouds will begin to develop over NEPA and the southern tier of NY. We expect fuel alternate-MVFR ceiling restrictions by 04-06z at KAVP, KELM, and KBGM. There is some possibility that KBGM will slip into IFR conditions, but not enough confidence to place in the forecast at this time. KITH is a tougher call, as SE winds typically provide downsloping and can eat away at lower stratus clouds. For now, we'll maintain continuity and keep a brief period of MVFR ceilings towards daybreak. We anticipate that lower clouds will not make it to KSYR and KRME, and have thus kept them in VFR status.

Friday, there could be some temporary lifting of ceiling bases and reduction in restrictive conditions during the morning and early afternoon hours. Thus, we've trended slightly better at KAVP, KBGM, and KELM, with the potential for a period of VFR once again. KITH, KSYR, and KRME should be unrestricted.

Light surface winds through this evening, will gradually increase out of the E-SE later tonight and Friday. Occasional gusts of 20-25 kt are likely by Friday, particularly at KBGM and KITH.

Outlook .

Friday night through Saturday night . Restrictions likely with lower ceilings and rain

Sunday . Some lingering rain showers and occasional restrictions possible, mainly at the Central NY terminals.

Monday . Mainly VFR.
