Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 340 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SHORT TERM. (Issued 340 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021)

Tonight and Friday night:

The low pressure system over SE MO this afternoon will gradually shift eastward tonight into Friday and then stall over OH Friday evening. Good moisture advection and positive vorticity advection will result in rain chances continuing through Friday morning for much of the area. Not expecting heavy rain just another good light to occasionally moderate rainfall event for southern Wisconsin. Drier air begins to work in on the NW side of the system on Friday and areas to the west of Madison dry out but will likely remain stuck in the clouds through Friday evening. The rest of the area can expect a slow diminishing trend in precip chances on Friday as the system ever so gradually pulls away from the area.

The pressure gradient tightens on Friday and some gusty winds to 35 mph are possible across the area. Winds turn more N/NE Friday night and with lingering moisture and enhanced convergence it's possible we could see some limited lake effect showers Friday night into Saturday. These would be mainly for areas south of Milwaukee.

LONG TERM. (Issued 340 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021)

Saturday through Thursday:

Upper ridge moves overhead on Saturday and we end up between two systems, the departing low over OH/PA and system moving across south-central Canada. Expect a decent fall day on Saturday with sunny skies and temps in the mid to upper 50s. A dry cold front arrives Sunday morning with winds increasing out of the NW. Temperatures will be dropping quickly Sunday evening so anyone going out for trick or treating should dress warmly, especially with some breezy winds to make it feel a little colder.

A broad longwave trough over Canada and the northern US on Sunday shifts south early next week and remains over the region through at least next Friday. This will result in below normal temps with highs staying in the low to mid 40s each day. There are some differences in models but a few shortwaves moving through the flow could bring our first flakes of the season towards the latter half of the week. GFS/ECMWF/CMC ensembles hint at the potential for some QPF/light snow during the Wed/Thu timeframe. Due to the uncertainty will stick with what the NBM has for pops for now.

Overnight lows could easily drop into the 20s with some of the cooler spots even dropping into the teens next week. We'll stay in this cooler pattern into next weekend but there is some suggestion in guidance that the trough finally clears with a ridge shifting east towards the end of next weekend.

AVIATION. (Issued 340 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021)

A mixture of MVFR and IFR cigs continue across the area this afternoon but rain will overspread the area tonight. As this happens cigs drop to IFR with bases falling to around 500ft. It's possible under a few of the more moderate showers cigs/vsbys could fall to LIFR at times tonight. Winds stay easterly with gusts to 20 to 25 kts. The pressure gradient increases on Friday and winds become more northeasterly. Gusts on Friday could approach 30kts at times. Locations closer to Lake Michigan will remain IFR/MVFR through Friday night as with some lake effect showers possible.

MARINE. (Issued 340 PM CDT Thu Oct 28 2021)

A low pressure system to our south will slowly shift east across the OH Valley tonight through Saturday. The pressure gradient will increase on Friday and result in some gusty northeasterly winds. Gusts could approach gale force across western Lake Michigan at times Friday afternoon and evening. A small craft advisory remains in effect through Saturday afternoon. Due to the gusty northeasterly winds expect waves to build to 8 to 10 feet Friday afternoon. Winds and waves start to decrease on Saturday as the system moves away from the area and high pressure briefly moves in.

This won't last long though as a dry cold front moves through on Sunday and results in winds switching to the NW and becoming gusty though at this time it looks like winds remain below small craft conditions.
