SHORT TERM. (Issued 418 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021)

Today through Sunday:

Bust out the flannel and chili ingredients as this weekend will feel more like fall! After a cool start with temps in the upper 30s to low 40s this morning, expect daytime highs to top off closer to normal in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees as the upper-level ridge with northwesterly flow builds eastward into the region. However, today will be windy as 30-40 kt low-level jet works its way across the Upper Midwest on the backside of the exiting trough. These stronger winds are progged to mix down and are looking to produce gusts around 25 to 30 mph across southern WI today. Could even see a few spots with gusts closer to 35 mph at times, especially closer to the lake. Winds are then progged to gradually taper off this evening, but still hold around 5-10 knots overnight.

Tonight will be a few degrees chillier with lows around 40 degrees closer to the Lake and mid to upper 30s further inland. There is a potential for frost development inland with low lying areas being more susceptible, but with the winds expected to stick around overnight, they will likely help limit frost formation. However, if winds are able to decouple and dewpoints drop a few degrees more than expected, then temps may fall a few degrees colder, which will be more conducive for frost. There still remains some uncertainty given the several degree spread in temps between GEFS and EPS members. Will continue to keep an eye on how things trend with the later model runs today, but confidence remains low this morning and will refrain from any headlines at this time.

Then Sunday we begin to see winds shift more westerly as a surface high builds south of the Ohio River Valley. This will result in slightly warmer temps with highs in the low to mid 60s.

LONG TERM. (Issued 418 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021)

Sunday night through Friday:

The warmer conditions will continue into early next week as the upper-level ridge slides eastward across the Western Great Lakes and southwesterly flow advects warmer temps into southern WI. Looking at highs temps to top off in the low 70s Monday and Tuesday. Our next chance for precip won't be until later Wednesday into Thursday as models are in fairly good with bringing a mid- level trough and surface low across the Northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest. Timing and track of this system along with amounts are still subject to change over the coming days, but general trends are showing low- end totals at this time. Once this system passes late week, temps look to return to near normal to close out the workweek.

AVIATION. (Issued 418 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021)

VFR conditions will prevail through the period as upper-level ridging gradually builds into the region today and Sunday. Main concern will be the increasing west to northwest winds across southern WI. Expecting to see gusts up to around 20-25 knots later this morning and continuing through the afternoon. Winds are then progged to gradually weaken through the evening.

MARINE. (Issued 418 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021)

Gusty west to northwest winds are expected to develop through the morning given the tighter pressure gradient and strong winds aloft mixing down. Looking at winds to increase to 20 to 25 knots with a few gusts around 30 knots. Thus a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect. Stronger northwesterly winds will persist across the lake into the evening, but come down slightly overnight and continue into Sunday. Winds are then expected to weaken later Sunday into Monday as the pressure gradient relaxes as surface high pressure builds south of the Ohio River Valley. This will then bring breezy southwesterly flow across the Lake Monday night into the middle of next week.
