LATEST UPDATE . Aviation

SYNOPSIS. Issued at 314 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

- Cooler with a chance for showers through Saturday

- Dry weather and seasonable temperatures Sunday into mid-week

- Chance for rain returns towards the second half of next week

DISCUSSION. (This evening through next Friday) Issued at 314 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

- Cooler with a chance for showers through Saturday

Scattered to numerous showers are expected this afternoon and evening across West Michigan as low pressure tracks to our southeast and a cold front drops in from the northwest. Small upper wave now lifting into Michigan from Indiana is helping to increase the coverage of showers across the area. We may see a brief increase in intensity as well late this afternoon and early this evening, mainly for areas east of Grand Rapids. Heavy downpours should be the main impact, but would not be shocked to see brief bursts of small hail as the freezing level drops to 9-10 kft and lift becomes enhanced. Showers will remain possible overnight as the upper trough works through, especially over our southeast counties late as the upper vort max at the base of the trough near OK/NE makes its way into Michigan.

We will then transition to more of a lake-effect/lake-enhanced shower pattern by Saturday as much cooler air surges in behind the upper trough. Good northwest flow and steepening low-level lapse rates between the colder air aloft and diurnal heating will allow bands of showers to stream across Lower Michigan during the day, but limited moisture depth (even assuming the models are underdone with moisture/convective depths from lake effect) supports only a scattered coverage and shallow convection. Showers may linger into the evening before moisture really starts to strip away, and much of Saturday night should be dry.

Solid advection of cold air will yield high temperatures only in the mid 50s tomorrow, which is below normal.

- Drier weather and seasonable temperatures Sunday into mid-week

Upper ridging and surface high pressure will provide several days of dry weather. High temperatures will warm close to normal to the upper 50s/low 60s Sunday, then warm solidly back into the 60s through Wednesday.

Potential for frost Sunday night/Monday morning continues to look low, but will continue to keep an eye on things as skies clear out and winds go light following an intrusion of cold air. Current forecast continues to carry min temps Monday morning around 40 for interior portions the State, which is in line with most of the GFS and Euro ensemble member from 00Z and 12Z model runs. We have seen a few members come in with lows in the mid/upper 30s though.

- Chance for rain returns towards the second half of next week

We may see a lower coverage of showers Wednesday tied to weak warm air advection ahead of low pressure moving towards the region. The better chance looks to arrive late Wednesday night and Thursday as the low tracks through Michigan.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 736 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

The area of rain that moved into this area late this afternoon is now moving out but another area of rain is moving in just behind the first area. It does seem this area of rain will be a little farther south than was the first area. So MKG and GRR will likely not this this rain event, however all the rest of our TAF sites will. The rain will move in by 04z and move out in the 09z to 12z time frame. Expect MVFR conditions during this rain event. Once it moves out enough dry air moves in so that all areas will see skies becoming at least partly cloudy for a few hours (around 12z).

Gusty winds are expected on Saturday as the coolest air we have seen in several months moves into the area. This will touch off some lake effect rain showers but they should be widely scattered and not have much impact on aviation. By evening winds will start to diminish and so will the showers and associated clouds.

MARINE. Issued at 314 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect now for the nearshore waters south of Grand Haven, and will go into effect late this evening for areas north of there. These advisories are in effect through Sunday evening.

A brief surge of higher northwest winds to about 25 knots will occur over Southern Lake Michigan late this afternoon and early this evening behind a cold front. This will also kick waves up into the 3 to 5 foot range south of Grand Haven starting this evening.

A tight surface pressure gradient will develop tonight as low pressure lifts up through Ontario and high pressure builds into the Plains. This combined with cold air advection over the warm lake waters will allow northwest winds to become sustained at 20 to 30 knots across much of Lake Michigan Saturday into Saturday night. The potential for gusts to exceed gale force continues to look very low, as we don't expect higher speeds aloft to mix into. The strong, persistent northwest flow will allow waves to build quite high Saturday and Saturday night, with heights rising as high as nine feet south of Muskegon.

Waterspouts will also be possible late tonight through Saturday as low-level lapse rates become quite steep over the water (lake surface to H850 delta T values in the upper teens Celsius) and as model forecast soundings show convective depths reaching 15-20 kft. The peak of the favorable conditions looks to be from early to late morning Saturday.

GRR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MI . None. LM . Small Craft Advisory from midnight tonight to 8 PM EDT Sunday for LMZ847>849.

Small Craft Advisory until 8 PM EDT Sunday for LMZ844>846.
