Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 339 PM CDT Tue Oct 19 2021

SHORT TERM. (Issued 339 PM CDT Tue Oct 19 2021)

Tonight through Wednesday night:

As high pressure lingers over the eastern CONUS tonight, dry conditions will continue. Clouds are expected to increase tonight ahead of an approaching surface low. The surface low will be tracking northeast from the central plans toward central Wisconsin. A weak frontal boundary will stall out somewhere in central Wisconsin early Wednesday before becoming a warm front as warm air advection increases ahead of the low. The overrunning WAA will keep most of the showers/storms north of the frontal boundary.

By Wednesday evening, the warm front will become more established as the surface low moves into Northeast Iowa/Southwest Wisconsin. This will put southern Wisconsin in the warm sector, giving the area better moisture and instability. There will be a small chance for some stronger storms Wednesday night. This chance will be largely dependent on if we can erode some of the capping in place and if the better forcing makes it into southern Wisconsin. The main hazards for any stronger storms would be some strong winds and hail.

LONG TERM. (Issued 339 PM CDT Tue Oct 19 2021)

Thursday through Tuesday:

The chance for rain showers will continue through Thursday morning as the the surface low lifts northeast out of Wisconsin. Winds will become northerly behind the low, ushering strong cold air advection into southern Wisconsin. Thursday will be one of those days where some areas will likely reach their high temperatures early in the day, with falling or near-steady temperatures throughout the afternoon as colder air moves into the region. These colder conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend, with daytime highs only reaching the low to mid 50s.

Despite a number of upper level shortwaves that rotate through the Great Lakes Region, conditions are expected to remain dry on Friday. High pressure will then gradually build into the region from the northwest on Saturday.

As the high pressure builds in, colder overnight lows are expected. There will be the potential for a widespread frost over the weekend. Will need to keep an eye on the frost potential, as any cloud cover overnight could insulate things enough to keep the temperatures above freezing.

The chance for more showers and storms will return at the start of work week. Will have to keep an eye on this as there is still much uncertainty with the timing of these showers.

AVIATION. (Issued 339 PM CDT Tue Oct 19 2021)

VFR conditions are expected to continue through the period. There will be a chance for isolated to scattered showers and storms Wednesday. Any storms could bring some MVFR cigs for a brief time. Gusty southwest winds will continue this afternoon before slightly decreasing overnight.

MARINE. (Issued 339 PM CDT Tue Oct 19 2021)

Gusty southwest winds are expected to persist through the overnight hours ahead of an approaching surface low. The surface low is expected to lift northeast across central Lake Michigan into northern Lake Huron during the day Thursday. On the backside of the low Thursday evening, strong north to northwest winds will funnel down Lake Michigan. Over the open waters, gales to 35 knots remain possible. In the nearshore, north to northwest winds up 30 knots and build waves bring concerns for small crafts.
