LATEST UPDATE . Aviation

DISCUSSION. (This evening through next Tuesday) Issued at 323 PM EST Tue Dec 7 2021

- Lake Enhanced Southwest Flow Snow Tonight

No changes to the winter weather advisory. Light snow is expected to develop tonight with lake enhancement in southwest flow. Weak northern stream shortwave trough remains well separated from the moisture laden southern stream low. So only weak synoptic scale UVV with QPF generally under a tenth of an inch for most of the forecast area. The exception being snow amounts of 1 to 3 inches and locally higher in the advisory area as southwest fetch over Lake Michigan continues into Wednesday afternoon.

Upper trough axis moving through on Wednesday with vorticity maxima at the base of the trough will help enhance lift and this is seen in model x-sections Omega, with forecast soundings showing inversion heights above the DGZ from late this evening until around noontime on Wednesday. Snow begins to taper off on Wednesday afternoon and evening as the trough axis moves east and shortwave ridging follows.

- Light snow or mixed precip Thursday, Rain on Friday

Warm advection and moisture return begins on Thursday as an upper trough is moving northeast and minoring out while another trough digs in across the western CONUS. Only light QPF expected for Thursday afternoon. Similar to the event last Sunday, this could end up being mostly snow changing to to mixed precip as model soundings show surface temperatures could remain near 0C due to evaporative cooling. The other effect of evaporation below the cloud base is the expected light QPF may yet be lighter still and some places across the southern forecast area may not see much precip at all.

The western CONUS trough results in PLains cyclogenesis on Thursday and the surface low makes a run at Lower Michigan. Latest guidance is starting to cluster on a path over or just south of central Lower Michigan. Southerly flow ahead of the low brings temperatures and dew points above 0C, so p-type should be all rain. The path of the low suggests QPF could be held down by dry slotting as the deeper moisture stays south with the warm conveyor belt and the mid level f-gen forcing and deformation axis remaining off to the north.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Wednesday evening) Issued at 708 PM EST Tue Dec 7 2021

Lake enhanced snow showers will mostly be north of Muskegon through the night. It will not be until midday Wednesday, when a the surface low moves into the area, that the snow showers will really impact MKG. Depending on just how the interaction of the surface low the the ongoing snow band happens, it is possible MKG may have a few hours of IFR or even LIFR in snow. It is not out of the question there could be a few hours of heavy snow. This will be very localized, so at this point it's to hard so say just how this will turn out. For now I have given MKG a few hours of IFR snow during the mid morning into early afternoon. I will call that good for now.

Otherwise the other TAF sites will be VFR into mid morning Wednesday. As that surface low moves through the area during the daytime on Wednesday, there will be 6 to 12 hour period with MVFR cigs but the other TAF sites should not see any snow. It is possible GRR could see some snow so i have VCSH for that then. Winds will not be much of an issue at any of the TAF sites for the next 36 hours.

MARINE. Issued at 323 PM EST Tue Dec 7 2021
