A gale watch is in effect for all of the open waters from Friday evening through Saturday morning for southwest gales to around 40 knots. DISCUSSION. (This evening through next Thursday) Issued at 340 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

- Quiet weather through Friday

Only light lake effect snow showers with little or no accumulation is expected tonight and Friday as inversion heights lower in a regime of subsidence and drying. Some partial clearing is possible inland overnight which will allow temperatures to plummet to near zero given arctic airmass. Shortwave ridging Friday night should help skies to clear out but southwest winds should prevent temperatures from falling as low.

- Light snow over the weekend

Series of quick hitting clippers and arctic anticyclones will be the story for the weekend into next week as pattern remains similar to the past couple weeks, except colder. Sharp trough moves in Saturday morning with lake-enhanced snow showers in southwest flow bringing some accums to the northwest half of the forecast area with 1 to 3 inches possible there. Flow goes west Saturday afternoon but inversion heights around 5 kft should limit accums to an inch or two across the western half of the forecast area.

Then a second upper trough amplifies with the axis swinging through on Sunday along with a sfc low tracking just south of Lower Michigan. Still some question how much snow this will generate as area of mid level f-gen may clip the southern half of Lower Michigan.

- Snow on Tuesday an continued cold through next week

Considerable ensemble support remains for snow late Monday into Tuesday as clipper combines with southwest flow lake enhancement. Some areas could see upwards of 4 inches if current forecast details hold. Arctic air follows in the wake of this low with 850 mb temps plunging to -20C for Wednesday. No real thawing weather seen through next weekend . or beyond, as 850 mb temps remain around minus 10C or colder much of the time.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 340 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

VFR conditions expected into Friday afternoon. Thin stratus deck will persist overnight with ceilings expected to be around 3500 to 4500 feet AGL and tops AOB 5000 feet. Winds will be northwest blo 10 knots overnight then light southeast on Friday.

MARINE. Issued at 340 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

Gale Watch has been issued for Friday night into Saturday morning as pressure gradient tightens up ahead of clipper low with some southwest gales to 35 knots possible.
