Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 342 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will allow for quiet weather tonight and Friday before our next storm system begins to approach from the south this weekend. This system will have the potential to bring another round of heavy rain and gusty winds, especially along the coast. Sunday will improve and be relatively warm, with highs around 60. A weaker system may bring showers on Tuesday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. Breezy conditions will become tranquil tonight as pressure gradient eases and high pres influences the region. Other than some passing cirrus overnight, skies should remain mostly clear. The combination of calm air and clear skies will allow radiational cooling to assist the cool airmass with temps falling into the 30s for much of the region. Some 20s will also be possible in the higher terrain, leading to areas of frost. Fog formation is expected overnight in river and mtn valleys.

SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. Calm conditions continue Friday with a mostly sunny day. High pres crests in the morning, waning in the afternoon. This is in advance of a low pressure system to the southwest.

Ahead of the low, winds turn east and begin advecting in moisture top-down. Dewpoint analysis shows a very dry plume advecting south and west across the GoME before the main precip shield arrives from the south. This may keep some of the more widespread rain out of the CWA until Sat, but some showers can't be ruled out in southern NH late Fri night, especially in S NH terrain.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Heavy rain Saturday and Saturday night continues to be the main forecast focus during the long term portion of the forecast. A deep closed low will continue to move eastward toward the northeast on Saturday with secondary SFC low development likely offshore of the Mid Atlantic by midday. As the forcing for ascent moves northeastward, rain will continue to overspread the forecast area Saturday morning. At this time, wet bulb temperatures aloft are too warm on much of the guidance suite to allow for any snow, but a few pings of sleet will be possible in the mountains at onset.

By Saturday afternoon the juxtaposition of dynamics, kinematics, moisture advection, and mesoscale processes (such as coastal frontogenesis) will favor a period of heavy rainfall. Much of the 12z model suite favors the coastal plain for the heaviest rainfall as this is where the best forcing for ascent should be as a moist and strengthening low level jet overruns the cooler boundary layer air. Max QPF values in the latest guidance range from 2" to 4", generally on the coastal plain and into portions of southeastern NH with lesser amounts elsewhere except for a small area on the eastern slopes of the Whites. Have blended amounts, with focus on the coastal plain for 2-3" of rain.

These rainfall amounts shouldn't be problematic as far as most rivers go. However, urban and low-lying flooding will be possible if not likely, especially in areas where leaves and other debris clog storm drains. If consensus QPF values continue to rise, then a flood watch may be needed for a portion of the forecast area.

As far as winds go, the vast majority of the forecast area will be stable in the lower levels so the low level jet around 850mb should remain at bay. However, a few wind gusts up to 25 MPH will be possible late Saturday and Saturday night. On the immediate coast, the potential for stronger wind gusts exists, with a period of G35 MPH possible.

Improvement is foreseen Sunday with drying expected and highs around 60. Monday looks good too albeit a little cooler. A short wave trough may bring some showers to the area on Tuesday.

AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. Short Term . VFR expected with winds mostly becoming light and variable tonight. Valley fog could be quite extensive Fri AM through KLEB, KHIE, and in vicinity of KCON/KAUG. Light winds expected Friday, with increasing cloudiness Friday night. MVFR cigs may arrive Fri night with some -SHRA.

Long Term . Cigs and vsbys lower to IFR or lower Saturday as heavy rain develops, especially in the afternoon. This will continue Saturday night. Improvement to VFR is foreseen Sunday and Monday in the wake of low pressure and the attendant cold front. LLWS is quite possible late Saturday and Saturday night as a low level jet increases from the southeast. Wind gusts at coastal terminals may reach 30 kt for a time Saturday evening.

MARINE. Short Term . SCA continues through Friday morning. Wind/waves will likely fall below criteria for the bays/intracoastals this evening and overnight, but wave height criteria remain over the coastal waters, 4 to 8 ft.

Long Term . Have issued a gale watch for all waters for late Saturday afternoon and night as southeasterly winds may very well frequently gust to gale force. Winds decrease and shift to the south after the front moves through by early Sunday, but lingering waves will likely keep Small Craft Advisory conditions continuing into Sunday.

GYX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ME . None. NH . None. MARINE . Gale Watch from Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night for ANZ150>154. Small Craft Advisory until 2 PM EDT Friday for ANZ150>154.
