Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 908 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

UPDATE. (Issued 908 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021)

Middle to high clouds should continue to gradually shift north northeast and clear the rest of the area from west to east into the overnight hours. Some middle level clouds extending into southern Minnesota may clip northern portions of the area overnight into Saturday morning, before shifting east in the afternoon, until the 500 mb vorticity maximum shifts through on the backside of the trough.

The pressure gradient will gradually tighten overnight into Saturday across the area, with west to northwest winds becoming gusty. Should see gusts to 30 MPH by middle morning and lingering through the afternoon on Saturday. Forecast lows in the upper 30s to around 40 inland looks reasonable, with milder 40s along the lake.

Winds will weaken Saturday night into Sunday morning, which should allow for some radiational cooling. Low lying areas and areas northwest of Madison may see patchy frost, as lows drop into the 36 to 38 degree range.

SHORT TERM. (Issued 214 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021)

Tonight and Saturday:

Light rain showers continue to push east across the area. They will remain confined to the eastern tier or two of counties, and should clear the area by late afternoon. Clearing is lagging a bit, but we should see skies gradually clear from west to east through this evening.

Northwest winds will increase tonight, becoming gusty on Saturday, with gusts to around 30 MPH expected. Highs tomorrow will be cool, with mid 50s expected for most. Tomorrow should be mostly sunny, with just a few fair weather cu during the day.

LONG TERM. (Issued 214 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021)

Saturday night through Friday:

Temperatures tomorrow night will fall into the mid to upper 30s as the ridge axis begins to approach from the west, and winds diminish. Patchy frost is expected for some locations late Saturday night, especially valleys and other low lying areas west and northwest of Madison.

Temperatures begin a warming trend on Sunday as the surface and upper level ridge axes shift east from the central Plains. Highs will be in the low to mid 60s on Sunday, followed by the upper 60s Monday and low 70s Tuesday. Dry weather is expected during this time.

A closed low is expected to push east from the High Plains on Wednesday, with an associated surface low lifting into the region Wednesday or Wednesday night. This will bring the next chance for precipitation to the area. Once that low passes by, look for temperatures to fall back into the 50s and low 60s to close out the workweek.
