Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 329 AM MST Sun Jan 16 2022

SHORT TERM. Today through Tuesday night . Little change in the weather pattern through Monday as high pressure aloft will keep a temperature inversion locked in place. Expect some daytime erosion of the fog/stratus along the western front in Harney county and in the lower Treasure Valley. It will expand again tonight possibly filling more of the Snake Plain into Monday. Tuesday will see northwest flow increase and temperatures cool aloft as an upper low approaches the region. This system will introduce a chance of light snow showers across the mountains of e-central Oregon and w-central Idaho Tuesday into Tuesday night, though little if any accumulating snow is expected. While models keep valleys dry, this system could bring flurries to areas still holding onto fog or low stratus.

LONG TERM. Wednesday through Sunday . Northwest flow aloft will continue through the week, providing the region with mostly dry and clear conditions. A few showers are possible in the West Central Mountains through Thursday as a trough passes to our north. The next chance of precipitation arrives on Friday with a shortwave trough clipping our northern counties. This will bring scattered snow showers to central Idaho and widespread clouds to the region. A ridge will build back into the region on Saturday, bringing dry and clear conditions through the extended period. A surface inversion is likely to settle back into the region on Saturday with this high pressure system. Areas of valley fog and stratus are likely to form overnight on Saturday and Sunday, especially in mountain valleys that received precipitation on Friday. Temperatures are expected to remain within a few degrees of normal throughout the extended period.

AVIATION. VFR above 5500 feet, with widespread stratus and fog causing MVFR/IFR and local LIFR conditions and mountain obscurations below 5500 feet through Sunday morning. Conditions will improve in some areas during the afternoon. Surface winds: Mainly variable 10 kt or less, except E 10-15 kt near KJER. Winds aloft at 10K feet MSL: W-NW 5-15 kt.

AIR STAGNATION. There will be little change in near surface conditions into early next week. The next couple of days will see mixing heights less than 2000 feet and light surface winds. A weak low pressure system Tue/Wed will cool temperatures aloft, but may not bring enough cooling or flow in lower valleys to have an effect on air mass. This would allow the inversion, although weaker, to remain intact with mixing heights less than 2000 feet. If so, the next chance to briefly break it would come Fri/Sat, though confidence is low at this time.

BOI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ID . Air Stagnation Advisory until 5 PM MST Monday IDZ011>014-016-028-033. OR . Air Stagnation Advisory until 5 PM MST /4 PM PST/ Monday ORZ061>064.
