Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 1001 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

UPDATE. (Issued 1000 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

The gusty winds diminished quickly this evening but models and local VWP still indicate some strengthening of the LLJ across far southern WI tonight. These stronger winds won't last long as high pressure north of MN will drop south towards the area Monday morning. One big difference from last night is that the breezes overnight will keep things mixed and we won't see the colder temps that we saw last night. Current forecast is on track and only changes were made to adjust for hourly trends.

Stumpf

SHORT TERM. (Issued 318 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

Tonight and Monday:

Cold front over the northern Plains will continue to move southeast tonight and Monday. The front is expected to pass across southern WI late tonight and Monday morning. Low to mid-level moisture will remain sparse so no precipitation is expected with the frontal passage. The ongoing gusty southwest winds will diminish by early evening, but some gustiness may continue through the evening as a low level jet passes across southern WI in combination with a shallow inversion. Warm air advection should continue to generate sct-bkn mid-high clouds into tonight before moving off to the east, with a few sprinkles skimming the far northeast CWA. With the winds becoming northeast Monday morning, Monday should be cooler in the east and north, but remain unseasonably warm in the west and south.

Monday Night through Wednesday:

A quiet period is expected as blocking high pressure ridge builds into the Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes Monday night and Tuesday. This pattern becomes fairly stationary for several days as low pressure deepens over southeast Canada into the northeast CONUS resulting in quiet conditions persisting. Onshore winds will keep temperatures cooler both Tuesday and Wednesday closer to the lake. Light southeast winds inland will result in a warmer day on Wednesday. Clear skies are expected much of this period as well.

LONG TERM. (Issued 318 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

Wednesday Night through Sunday:

Following above discussion, Extended guidance in reasonable agreement to the west as well, with several weaker short waves affecting the Northwest CONUS into the northern Plains but their influence remains well west of the area through Friday. Guidance splits on the timing of the eventual protective high pressure ridge flattening across our region during the Friday/Saturday time period. ECMWF more persistent in keeping ridge over the western Great Lakes into Sunday, while GFS and GEM break down ridge and move low pressure wave through the area Friday night into Saturday. The ECMWF delays passing short wave and cold front until later in the weekend. Due to the uncertainty with the amount of synoptic lift and available moisture, wl continue dry forecast for most of the weekend period as well. Daytime temperatures will remain at or above seasonal normal into early October with night time temps remaining above 40.

AVIATION. (Issued 1000 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

Winds weakened earlier this evening as a weak inversion near the surface developed. Stronger winds above this inversion will bring a period of LLWS through roughly 6z to 8z. It's possible some of these stronger winds could mix down so brief gusts to 20 to 25 kts are possible overnight. A cold front drops south on Monday with winds shifting from W to NE at all terminals by 18z. Wind gusts will be highest closer to Lake Michigan where NE gusts to 25 kts are possible through Monday evening.

MARINE. (Issued 318 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

Open Waters . Showers across northern Lake Michigan have become more isolated since late morning as stronger burst of low level warm air advection shifted to the east. May yet be a few showers that affect this area into the evening. Otherwise, gusty winds will continue overnight across southern Lake Michigan ahead of an approaching backdoor cold front. Farther north, the winds will remain gusty this evening, but then diminish as the cold front nears and passes through later tonight. Gusty northeast winds will develop behind the passing front late tonight and Monday. Gusts should remain mostly less than 25 kts.

Nearshore . Gusty southwest winds will continue into tonight despite the loss of insolation late this afternoon. A passing low level jet and instability over the nearshore waters will allow some of these stronger winds to mix down to lake surface. Hence the ongoing Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect until late tonight south of Port Washington. North of Port Washington, the strongest winds are expected this evening. Hence the Small Craft Advisory will begin at 7 pm CDT. Gusty northeast winds and resultant waves behind the backdoor cold front will approach Small Craft Advisory levels Monday afternoon and evening.

BEACHES. (Issued 318 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021)

A period of northeast winds of 15 to 20 knots is expected to develop along the shore Monday afternoon and evening, behind a passing cold front. Waves are expected to increase to 3 to 5 feet during this period resulting in dangerous swimming conditions and a High Swim Risk at Lake Michigan beaches along Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee and Racine Counties. A Beach Hazard Statement for dangerous swimming conditions will be in effect Monday afternoon and evening.
