Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 225 PM MST Sun Jan 16 2022

SHORT TERM. Tonight through Tuesday night . Mainly persistence through Tuesday night. Stratus and areas of fog again expected to increase in the Snake Basin and the valleys of eastern Oregon during the nights and mornings, decreasing in the afternoons. Little day-to-day change in temperatures. A weak trough will bring a slight chance of snow to northern-most mountains late Tuesday and Tuesday night. Trough will not be strong enough to mix out the low-elevation inversion.

LONG TERM. Wednesday through Sunday . Northwest flow aloft will continue through the week, providing the region with mostly dry and clear conditions. Showers are possible in the West Central Mountains through Thursday as a trough passes to our north. The next chance of precipitation will arrive on Friday with a shortwave trough clipping our northern counties. This will bring scattered snow showers to central Idaho and widespread clouds to the region. A ridge will build back into the region on Saturday, bringing dry and clear conditions through the extended period. A surface inversion is likely to settle back into the region on Saturday with this high pressure system. Areas of valley fog and stratus are expected to form overnight on Saturday and Sunday, especially in mountain valleys that received precipitation on Friday. Temperatures are expected to remain within a few degrees of normal throughout the extended period.

AVIATION. VFR above 5500 feet, with widespread stratus and fog causing MVFR/IFR and local LIFR conditions and mountain obscurations below 5500 feet through Sunday morning. Conditions will improve in some areas during the afternoon. Surface winds: Mainly variable 10 kt or less, except E 10-15 kt near KJER. Winds aloft at 10K feet MSL: W-NW 5-15 kt.

AIR STAGNATION. Air Stagnation Advisory has been extended until 11 AM MST Friday with mixing heights staying below 1800 feet AGL along with light winds. On Friday a trough from the north may be strong enough to weaken or even briefly mix out the inversion, with mixing height forecast to rise to 2500 feet AGL and transport wind also increasing. But the main upper ridge will still be near the coast and forecast models show it building inland again by Sunday.

BOI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ID . Air Stagnation Advisory until 11 AM MST Friday IDZ011>014-016-028-033. OR . Air Stagnation Advisory until 11 AM MST /10 AM PST/ Friday ORZ061>064.
