Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Medford OR 1045 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

.Updated aviation discussion.

UPDATE. An update is not necessary. A slow moving warm front will gradually push north to northeastward tonight through Wednesday night with a occasional light rain to the west and north of the Rogue Valley. A weakening cold front will follow late Thursday into Thursday night with a continued slight chance of rain limited to northern Douglas County and northward. Over the next 48 hours, less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected for the coast south of Cape Blanco, around a tenth to two tenths are forecast for the coast north of Cape Blanco, and up to five hundredths for the inland portion of Douglas County.

High pressure will follow Friday with a lengthy episode of dry air, and a stable air mass likely to follow at least through the first half of next week.

AVIATION. 19/06Z TAFs . A warm front is impacting the forecast area this evening, bringing a mix of IFR and MVFR conditions to most areas west of the Cascades. IFR/MVFR ceilings will continue to move inland overnight into Wednesday morning, affecting most areas from the Cascades westward. These lower conditions will likely last through much of Wednesday. Mountain obscuration will spread eastward overnight into Wednesday morning too. East of the Cascades, mountain obscuration is expected but valley terminals should remain VFR through Wednesday. Keene

MARINE. Updated 130 PM PST Tuesday 18 January 2022 . Conditions will remain relatively calm under high pressure through much of today and tomorrow. A thermal trough will redevelop beginning Thursday, producing gusty north winds and steep seas. Calmer conditions should be returning by early next week. -Miles

PREV DISCUSSION. /Issued 520 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022/

SHORT TERM . Tonight through Thursday night (1/18-1/20) .

Looking at satellite imagery shows several key features underlying the forecast. East of the Cascades, a small band of clouds is moving eastward associated with a decaying front. Although radar is not showing much; noting our radar coverage, some precipitation, even if a few drops, is possible.

Going westward, a few showers are occurring in Douglas County, any precipitation falling will be very light . Meanwhile, another very weak front is shown offshore in some higher clouds. This band is moving inland, but they are not noteworthy otherwise. This non-noteworthy nature will be the overall theme through Thursday.

A couple of weak systems will move onshore over the day. The first will be a warm front that will induce some isentropic lift for areas west of the Cascades tonight into tomorrow. Then another weak cold front will move overtop the competing ridge trying to build in from areas to our south and west. This could bring some additional precipitation to areas of the coast and north of the Umpqua Divide on Wednesday night before tapering off Thursday afternoon.

Rain and mountain snow will be very light with these features, but it will work to break up the inversion enough to allow for enough mixing to keep from stagnating air in the short term. Expect impacts to be limited.

The ridge of high pressure will then begin to take hold on Thursday afternoon into the extended portion of the forecast, and air stagnation will be a consideration. -Schaaf

LONG TERM . Friday through Tuesday night.

By Friday into the weekend, high pressure will set up east of the Cascades with a pretty strong east to west pressure gradient across Oregon and California. The easterly flow at 700 mb and 850 mb is anomalously high for this weekend. During this period of strong offshore flow, we're expecting warmer and drier temperatures, especially west of the Cascades. Temperatures will end up being about 10 degrees warmer than normal with highs pushing into the upper 50's along the coast and within the valleys west of the Cascades. As for the wind forecast, we could see sustained east winds up to 20 mph at times along the higher terrain of the Cascades.

This period of warm temperatures, dry weather and high pressure will continue into the start of next week as the NBM is forecasting a probability of precipitation under 5 percent through next Friday the 28th. That suggests there is very high confidence this dry stretch will continue up until the last days of January. For what it's worth, the NBM is forecasting a 20 percent chance of 0.01 inches of precipitation around the 29th of January. -Smith
