LATEST UPDATE . Aviation

DISCUSSION. (This evening through next Sunday) Issued at 328 PM EST Sun Jan 16 2022

-Light lake effect snow late tonight and Monday; little impact

Late tonight and Monday brisk cyclonic flow develops over Michigan in response to the powerful storm moving up the east coast. The mean wind direction starts out north-northwest late tonight and backs to the northwest on Monday, resulting in a period of light lake effect snow showers for areas west of Hwy 131. Generally only a light dusting is anticipated, but some local 1" amounts are possible along the lakeshore south of Holland.

Even though a period of deeper moisture occurs late tonight and early Monday morning as a mid level shortwave comes through, the overall conditions are not favorable for much in the way of accumulation. The DGZ is up quite high (above 7K feet) rather than firmly in the cloud layer early in the event, and after 18Z Monday the DGZ is barely even saturated anymore with inversion heights of only around 4K ft.

-Some travel impacts possible Wed afternoon into Thursday morning

A clipper system tracking north of here brings a brief period of mild temperatures Tuesday into Tuesday night which sends temperatures above freezing for a time. This is followed by temperatures abruptly crashing into the teens on Wednesday behind a cold front which passes through early in the day.

Roads will likely become slick Wednesday afternoon as lake effect snow showers develop with the Arctic cold frontal passage, leading to a potentially challenging Wednesday evening commute near and west of Hwy 131. Accumulations may be somewhat limited due to relatively low inversion heights, but the combination of the frigid temps and at least minor accumulations may lead to some travel impacts. Lake effect snow showers are expected to diminish by late Thursday as high pressure builds in from the west.

-More cold and potential lake effect next weekend

Confidence is high in ensemble guidance for below normal temperatures next weekend, but details regarding snow/lake effect are less certain. Latest guidance suggests the potential for a southwest flow lake effect/enhanced event on Saturday ahead of the next cold front, followed by northwest flow lake effect Sunday behind it.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday evening) Issued at 631 PM EST Sun Jan 16 2022

MVFR conditions will develop overnight and continue into Monday and light snow showers will develop near Lake Michigan. Winds around 5 knots tonight will increase later tonight with northwest winds gusting to 25 knots at times by Monday afternoon.

MARINE. Issued at 328 PM EST Sun Jan 16 2022

Winds will increase out of the north-northwest late tonight and back more to the northwest on Monday - then westerly Monday night. Small craft advisories will be in effect through 7 am Tuesday, but any lull in winds/waves is brief Tuesday as southerly flow strengthens by late in the day Tuesday. Then another Arctic front brings the potential for northwest gales on Wednesday along with a freezing spray threat.

GRR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MI . None. LM . Small Craft Advisory from 4 AM Monday to 7 AM EST Tuesday for LMZ844>849.
