Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 239 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

NEAR TERM. (Today through Tonight) Issued at 239 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

. Cool and breezy with increasing chances of lake effect rain showers today into tonight .

High Impact Weather Potential . None.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast . Low pressure and associated cold front stretches from the Eastern Great Lakes thru the Ohio Valley and the Lower Mississippi Valley early this morning. Widespread synoptically- drive rain via this system has exited our CWA . but additional shower activity has begun to develop just ahead of the pronounced upper trough axis now swinging thru Western Upper Michigan and Wisconsin. CAA has begun across the Western Great Lakes on the back side of the departing surface low center . with 850 mb temps now around +5 C. No lake effect rain showers have developed as of yet . but as low level CAA continues thru today rain shower chances will again increase.

Sharp upper trough axis will reach our western CWA early this morning . and exit our CWA this afternoon. Deep cyclonic flow will provide additional synoptic support to promote scattered rain shower development as this feature traverses thru our area today. Latest near term models show 850 mb temps will drop to around 0 C by 15Z this morning and will hold right around that temp for the rest of today and thru tonight. With lake temps generally in the upper 50s to lower 60s . resulting delta Ts will be sufficiently cold to provide lake enhancement to scattered synoptic rain shower development. NW winds will target our typical lake effect areas in Eastern Upper and NW/N Central Lower Michigan for highest POPs and greatest QPF.

Wind speeds will increase as well in response to a tightening pressure gradient behind the departing low. And with temps only warming into the low to mid 50s combined with increasingly breezy and rainy conditions . expect a rather raw/cool mid October day across our Northwoods. Precip chances will decrease a bit later today and tonight as the upper trough axis departs . but cool and breezy conditions will remain along with small chances of showers. Low temps tonight will cool into the low to mid 40s.

SHORT TERM. (Sunday through Monday) Issued at 239 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

. Lake effect linger Sunday morning .

High impact weather potential: Minimal

Synopsis/Forecast: Troughing shifts east into Quebec on Sunday while heights start to rise over Michigan thanks to anomalously strong ridging pushing up into south central Canada. A strengthening surface low will be well off to our northeast Sunday morning, east of James Bay . while high pressure starts to nudge into the Tennessee Valley. The morning hours will keep enough overlake instability (850mb temps near zero and lake surface temperatures in the mid teens) and synoptic moisture sticking around to support continued lake effect showers. Our northwest winds from Saturday will back just a bit out of the WNW, shifting the areas of shower chances through the morning. A weak surface trough moving through in the afternoon/early evening will veer winds back to the NW . but by this time drier air will be filtering in from the southwest. Overall winds will remain brisk, with strongest gusts between 25 and 30mph. Shower chances finally come to an end Sunday night, with Monday bringing more sun as the surface ridge axis moves overhead.

Temperatures remain in the low to mid 50's Sunday where clouds stick around the longest. Some areas near and southwest of TVC may get up into the low 60's once again. Lows will be in the upper 30s to low 40s Sunday night (a tad warmer near Lake Michigan). A bit warmer Monday during the day, then southwest winds Monday night should keep lows in the 40's.

LONG TERM. (Monday night through Friday) Issued at 239 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

High impact weather potential: Minimal

Shortwave ridging moves overhead Tuesday, keeping our region dry and quiet. With surface high pressure to our south winds remain light out of the southwest, and temperatures rebound into the upper 60's or even 70 for many locations. Heading into midweek precip chances enter back in thanks to an upper level cutoff pushing into the upper Mississippi Valley and a surface front sliding south into the upper Great Lakes . a surface low rides along this boundary . and tries to strengthen across Michigan on Thursday. Depending on its exact track this could bring us our first push of actual cold air late in the weekend. Guidance is hinting at the s-word heading into next weekend, but this is uncertain as of now as guidance leaves a lot to be desired for agreement on the upper level pattern evolution. Either way it looks like afternoon highs drop to around 50 by the end of the week, with overnight lows dropping well into the 30's . right around normal for this time of year.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1139 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Widespread showers have ended, as low pressure departs across Lk Ontario. Colder air will enters the region late tonight into Saturday, and lake effect rain showers will develop off of Lake MI. There is a chance of occasional MVFR conditions (mainly cigs) with the lake effect showers on Saturday. Otherwise mostly VFR.

Light nw winds for much of tonight, increasing a bit toward morning and become gusty on Saturday.

MARINE. Issued at 239 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

Winds and waves will reach SCA criteria today into this evening as the pressure gradient tightens in the wake of the departing low pressure system to our SE. Arrival of the approaching upper trough axis combined with increasing over-lake instability will produce scattered to numerous rain showers across much of Northern Michigan today and tonight . with the best chances of rain targeting our typical northwest flow lake effect areas. Rain chances will diminish on Sunday . with dry wx and a warming trend expected for the early part of the upcoming work week.
