Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 620 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SHORT TERM. (This evening through Friday) Issued at 204 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

At 2 PM, skies were sunny to partly sunny with temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s.

With stronger winds aloft tonight, the chances of valley fog look far less, so kept them out of the forecast grids. If this fog did happen to occur, it would be more in the sheltered valleys and over the main channel of the Mississippi River. Low temperatures tonight will range from the upper 30s to lower 50s.

On Friday afternoon and evening, a cold front will move east through the region. The instability is rather weak ahead of this front with surface-based and 0-1 mixed layer CAPES generally less than 250 J/kg. As a result, expecting a line of showers and scattered storms. With it still looking like the 0-3 and 0-6 km shear ahead of this front will remain generally 30 knots or less, so not anticipating any severe weather.

LONG TERM. (Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 204 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

High pressure will provide dry weather through Wednesday. Low temperatures over the weekend will range will range from the mid-30s to mid-40s. The coldest temperatures will be in central and north-central Wisconsin. These temperatures will be cold enough that Frost Advisories may be needed on both nights.

Southerly winds will bring much warmer temperatures into the area for the remainder of the forecast area. High temperatures will range from the lower 70s to lower 80s. Low temperatures will range from the mid-40s to mid-50s.

As far as the next chance of rain, the GFS has a shortwave moving through the region from from Wednesday night into Thursday. Meanwhile, the ECMWF keeps this wave off to our west and our area remains dry.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) Issued at 620 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

VFR conditions should prevail but will have to watch for redevelopment of early morning valley fog again tonight.

Surface ridge crossing tonight will make for another shot at valley fog with light winds and clear skies. Gradient should begin to increase tonight though, especially west of the Mississippi River which could limit extent of fog impacts. Also some hints that fog could form earlier tonight, but then slow up as gradient mixes a little with boundary layer winds ramping up to nearly 20kts according to latest RAP guidance.

Passage of cold front later Friday could bring some VFR ceilings to the region with potential band of showers.
