Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 649 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

NEAR TERM. (Today through Tonight) Issued at 253 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

High Impact Weather Potential . maybe a touch of frost tonight in interior cold spots.

A cold front is dropping southward thru the Straits area. Trailing this front is a 1012mb surface high over far nw Ontario. The front will move downstate by early afternoon, and the trailing high will be centered over upper MI tonight. Zone of stronger isentropic ascent and fgen forcing has eased eastward (finally), and no precip is occurring in northern MI. None is expected, as the incoming cold front runs into a drying airmass.

500mb ridging will amplify in the central US and s central Canada. We remain under nw flow aloft, and a few ripples are transiting the area. But actual moisture is found only over ne Canada, and south of the cold front in parts of the eastern lakes and upper OH Valley. Some stratus/fog is present over parts of eastern upper MI. Given the decreasing sun angle and length of day, it will take some time to fully erode this. Meanwhile, healthy cu/stratocu development will occur and migrate south today, with the most substantial cloud cover by late afternoon south of M-32. Partly sunny to (at times) mostly cloudy skies are expected. Clouds will exit to the south this evening, with mostly clear skies for the rest of the night, or at least until patchy fog/stratus reforms (mainly near/north of M-32).

Max temps will range from the low 60s near Whitefish Bay, to the low/mid 70s near Gladwin/Standish. A chilly night tonight, in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Would not totally preclude a touch of frost in some interior cold spots.

SHORT TERM. (Tuesday through Wednesday) Issued at 253 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

. Dry and Mild .

High impact weather potential: None expected

Synopsis/Pattern: The upper level pattern continues to amplify heading into Tuesday. Anomalously strong ridging pokes up into northern Manitoba, and extends all the way down through the Mississippi Valley. This ridging will be sandwiched between a cutoff low over Quebec and a shortwave moving onto the British Columbia coast. This omega-type blocking pattern hangs on through Thursday. This will lead to quiet weather with surface high pressure remaining in control through midweek.

Forecast/Details: Some clouds may be found across eastern upper through the Tuesday, as an area of enhanced midlevel moisture scoots southeast through the upper Great Lakes. Do not think there will be enough support to generate any showers though, so left the forecast dry. South of the bridge We'll mix up to around 4 kft and have drier air, so am expecting mostly (if not completely) sunny skies and warming temps. The core of warmest 850mb air remains to our west, but nonetheless we'll have temperatures being 5 to 10 degrees above normal through much of the week. Heading into Wednesday surface high pressure continues to strengthen across Hudson Bay and Quebec, with surface ridging extending down into the Great Lakes. Another warm late September day with highs mainly in the low 70's.

LONG TERM. (Wednesday night through Sunday) Issued at 253 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

High impact weather potential: Minimal

Heading into the late week the Quebec cutoff low drops south across New England, with a few shortwaves rotating around it. The upper level ridge axis shifts over the Great Lakes but some guidance tries to dampen its amplitude . with discrepancies between models and between runs becoming much more pronounced. Multiple perturbations want to push into the ridge . but strength and effectiveness of these waves will be questionable until the weekend. By the weekend the general consensus is that the ridge flattens out and a surface low treks into/near the Great Lakes, bringing in slightly cooler conditions and low precip chances. With how poorly the upper level pattern is being handled by guidance there's plenty of time for things to change for the weekend, with precip potential possible becoming greater as we get closer.

AVIATION. (For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning) Issued at 649 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

Morning fog/stratus, mainly PLN/APN.

A weak cold front is moving south across northern lower MI. An area of fog/stratus lags behind the front, resulting in occasional IFR/LIFR conditions at PLN/APN this morning. A little light valley fog is also impacting mbL. The fog/stratus will move southward with time, but will also start to mix out into an MVFR to VFR cu/stratocu deck once we get past sunrise. High pressure will eventually build into upper MI for tonight. This will provide mainly quiet wx, though again some overnight fog/stratus is a possibility.

Winds becoming north today, while remaining on the light side.

MARINE. Issued at 253 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

A cold front will drop across northern MI this morning. Winds will change from sw to northerly as the front passes, though winds will remain light. Overall good boating conditions, with no advisories needed.
