Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 326 AM EST Wed Jan 19 2022

SYNOPSIS. A clipper will pass north of the area today, but some light snow will be possible mainly across the mountains during the day. Another round of snow looks to miss the area to the south on Thursday, sliding just off the coast during the day. A large, cold, Canadian high pressure system will build over the region to end the week. Low pressure will likely track off the Eastern Seaboard this weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. S/WV trof crossing N of the Great Lakes will spread an area of light snow ahead of it today. This clipper system is going to be a bit too far N to really impact much of the forecast area . but some light snow is expected for the Nrn half. Forecast soundings show that much of the forecast lift is below the snow growth zone and thus the snowfall may lack some efficiency. Most forecast sounding locations in the North Country and Wrn ME mtns have around 1 inch of snow . and even then some of that may come in the form of upslope snow showers tonight. Overall lowered snow amounts slightly . but there is little change to the forecast. Some light accumulations and locally slick travel are possible.

A very cold air mass will be in place ahead of the clipper . and so increasing SW flow will initially ride up and over the cold dome Cold air damming will erode. but it will be slow going . especially across Wrn ME. I blended in some higher resolution guidance to hold onto a pocket of colder air over interior Wrn ME thru the afternoon.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/. Tonight temps will remain rather steady . with abundant cloud cover forecast. As a cold front drops thru the area temps may actually rise a bit before falling as the low level inversion gets mixed out.

Thu a trailing S/WV trof will interact with cold front strung out to our S and produce a weak wave along the boundary. This is forecast to produce an area of anafrontal snow . but mainly across Srn New England and out into the Gulf of ME. Some light snow may brush parts of SErn NH and coastal Wrn ME . but I do not think any accumulation makes it into the forecast area.

In the wake of the frontal wave offshore flow increases and we will actually be able to clear things out. CAA and downsloping help to mix out the cloud cover leading to mostly clear by late in the day It will be colder across the Nrn zones. where CAA may cap the daytime warming . as zones farther S climb to near normal.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. End of week trends dry, more cold, as strong high pressure looks to pass through northern New England.

Dry conditions continue Thursday night into Friday as upper jet pushes east. The only mention of precip through Friday night will be the chance for a few flurries north of the mtns Thursday night.

Strong high pressure will nose into the region Friday, passing overhead Friday night. While 850mb temperatures aren’t notably cool, the conditions seem to line up for a great night of radiational cooling. Chose to go below guidance with the expectation that there will be few clouds and calm wind. Some guidance resolves a dry, very calm column of air via forecast soundings. Locations in the western ME mountains may have near calm winds (5 kts or less) through the mid levels briefly Fri night.

Considering the high’s location into Saturday has implications on the developing storm off the Delmarva coast. Despite its slow departure during the day, the high will influence this southern stream disturbance. Global suites have been trending towards a flatter, less amplified solution, and have opted to continue to decrease PoPs as the threat for precip remains offshore Sat and Sat night.

Next week will feature a somewhat active pattern, but the threat outside some passing light snow showers is low. The next chance of more widespread precip arrives Wednesday. This will again depend on timing of disturbances ahead of broad high pressure crossing the nation’s midsection. Current thinking is the phasing of some shortwaves will occur too far south to see any substantial QPF, however a brush as it exits the east coast may bring some light snow across parts of ME and NH.

AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Short Term . Widespread VFR conditions expected thru Thu. While a weak clipper is passing N of the area today I am not anticipating areas of -SN to make it into any of the TAF sites. Some MVFR CIGs may move inland off the Gulf of ME and affect the RKD area this afternoon . but otherwise I keep the TAFs VFR thru the period. There is a window for some marginal LLWS with the passage of the warm front aloft but confidence was a little too low to hit hard in the TAFs. I will continue to monitor hi-res guidance to see if winds aloft trend stronger.

Long Term . VFR conditions through Saturday. Strong high pressure will keep skies mostly clear Friday and Friday night. Some clouds will increase along the coast overnight into Saturday. Some -SHSN will be possible along coastal TAF sites Sat night, which may bring MVFR vis briefly.

MARINE. Short Term . SW flow ahead of an approaching clipper system will bring a round of gale force gusts to all waters today. Winds and seas will gradually diminish overnight . but SCA conditions are expected to linger into Thu morning. A brief period of marginal SCA conditions is possible again late Thu afternoon. With temps warming today the threat of moderate freezing spray will diminish after sunrise.

Long Term . Below SCA conditions for much of the waters. Some 4ft waves may move into the outer coastal waters Friday. Otherwise, winds largely remain out of the north, with cold temperatures. Light freezing spray may be possible Fri thru Sat.
