Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 249 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

NEAR TERM. (Through Tonight) Issued at 227 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

. Breezy and Mild Overnight; Chance of Showers far South .

High Impact Weather Potential . None is expected.

A fairly deep area of low pressure (993 mb) currently centered across southeastern Missouri will continue to track slowly eastward tonight. This system is expected to bring increasing and thickening clouds to northern Michigan through the night. Meanwhile, the northern shield of rain showers associated with this system may graze far southern counties after midnight. Dry air at low levels, however will make it tough for rain to actually hit the ground so will keep pops in the chance category. Easterly winds are expected to continue to be a bit on the gusty side. Temperatures are not expected to fall off all that much due to the combination of the wind and cloud cover so raised lows into the mild mid and upper 40s.

SHORT TERM. (Friday through Sunday) Issued at 227 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Closed upper low in the TN Valley Friday moves slowly east and north into the vicinity of Lake Ontario by Sunday. Models then have it open up and swept east quickly on Sunday, although timing of that happening must be suspect. Upper trough over W Canada rotates into the northern Great Lakes during that same time period. Surface low in the Canadian trough moves into Ontario by Sunday. This will keep the colder air from reaching the Great Lakes by deflecting the return northeastern flow on the close low. So mild conditions continue at least through the weekend.

Moist flow on the northeast side of the low will draw in above climatological PWATs Friday and Saturday and bring the chance for some showers especially south of M-55. As the low moves northeast, the deeper moisture shifts east out of the area Sunday. The second low will bring a chance for some showers to the U.P. Sunday.

With the low so close, pressure gradient will be tight early on in the weekend, so gusty winds expected Friday and then slowly diminishing through Sunday morning.

Highs will be mainly in the 50s through the period, still about 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Lows will be around 40.

LONG TERM. (Sunday night through Thursday) Issued at 227 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Confidence in the extended forecast is not high at this point due to uncertainties in the movement of the upper low. In any case, temperatures will be lowering during the period, closer to normal. A cold front moves through the region as the Canadian trough settles over the northern U.S. A few disturbances moving across the Great Lakes will bring the chance for showers through the entire period. Temperatures will cool enough during the nighttime hours, that flurries or light snow are possible.

Highs will be mainly in the 40s. Lows in the 30s early, then 20s the rest of the week.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 131 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Almost all of the IFR/MVFR cigs have dissipated across the TAF sites but still can't rule out a patch or two of this from drifting across the region this afternoon. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected into early tonight. MVFR cigs are then expected to reform later tonight and largely hold into Friday morning as low pressure moves by to the south. There will be a chance of rain late tonight into Friday with the best chance at mbL. Easterly winds will be gusty this afternoon and to a lesser degree on Friday as well.

MARINE. Issued at 227 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

Gusty easterly winds will continue through Friday with small craft advisories posted for several nearshore zones on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. This is in response to low pressure moving by to our south. Winds will slowly diminish going into Friday night and Saturday morning.

APX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MI . NONE. LH . SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 8 PM this evening to 6 PM EDT Friday for LHZ349. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY until 6 PM EDT Friday for LHZ347-348.
