Updated aviation portion for 06Z TAF issuance

SHORT TERM. Tonight and Saturday Issued at 243 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Light showers associated with a short-wave trough, jet streak and frontogenetic forcing will shift east of the region in the next hour or two. Dry slotting will bring a period of partly cloudy skies in the late afternoon and early evening, but increasing clouds associated with an approaching upper trough will overspread the region for the rest of the night. Scattered light showers or sprinkles are possible across far northern WI, mainly after midnight. The prospects for frost are slim, as temperatures will be too warm in most areas, and extensive cloud cover and steady west winds will preclude frost development. Lows tonight should be mostly in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

On Saturday, any lingering sprinkles should end early in the far north, and cloud cover will decrease from southwest to northeast during the morning. West to northwest winds will gust to 20 to 25 knots. High temperatures will be in the middle to upper 50s.

LONG TERM. Saturday Night Through Friday Issued at 243 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Models continue to indicate a progressive mean flow across the CONUS through the middle of next week before the flow slows and becomes more amplified later in the week. Initially, a northwest flow to exist across WI this weekend, then an upper ridge arrives to start the work week. Dry and warmer conditions to exist through Tuesday with max temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Models have come into better agreement with the timing of an eastward moving mid-level shortwave trough Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. This would bring northeast WI its next chance of precipitation, along with cooler temperatures by next Thursday and Friday.

Saturday night and Sunday . A surface ridge will be situated over the east-central CONUS and an upper ridge to be located over the Rockies Saturday night. This combination will bring clear skies and diminishing winds to northeast WI which would set the stage for a cool night. Min temperatures to range from the lower to middle 30s north-central WI, to the lower 40s near Lake MI. A Frost Advisory may be needed where the growing season has not ended. This surface ridge reaches the western Great Lakes by Sunday afternoon as the upper ridge moves into the central Plains. Look for plenty of sunshine and pleasant conditions with a west-northwest wind at 10 to 15 mph. The onset of weak WAA will lift max temperatures into the 60-65 degree range across most of the forecast area.

Sunday night and Monday . Another cool night on tap for Sunday night as the surface ridge to reside practically overhead. While winds will be light/variable, they will be countered by persistent WAA. Thus, temperatures should be fairly close to readings expected Saturday night. This would again bring the threat of frost to far northeast and parts of central WI. As the surface ridge slides to our east on Monday, wind will back to the south-southwest and usher in a warmer air mass into northeast WI. The upper ridge to also reach WI on Monday, so anticipate another sunny day with max temperatures reaching the middle 60s near Lake MI, middle 60s to near 70 degrees inland.

Monday night and Tuesday . A prevailing southwest flow aloft to prevent temperatures from falling anywhere as far as previous nights (5 to 10 degrees warmer). Other than a few more clouds on Tuesday, another pleasant and warm day can be expected. 8H temperatures climbing above 10C should bring max temperatures into the middle 60s near Lake MI, middle to upper 60s north and upper 60s to lower 70s south.

Tuesday night and Wednesday . Changes begin to take shape Tuesday night as a weak frontal boundary drops south into central WI by 12Z Wednesday. A lack of upper support and deep low-level moisture should keep the forecast dry Tuesday night. This boundary is progged to hold near stationary over WI on Wednesday as a mid-level shortwave trough moves across the northern Plains. Clouds are forecast to gradually overspread the region with a small chance of showers reaching northeast WI by Wednesday afternoon. These clouds and the threat of precipitation will cool temperatures with readings around 60 degrees north, lower to middle 60s south.

Wednesday night and Thursday . The best likelihood of seeing precipitation will be during this time frame as the shortwave trough moves into the Great Lakes region. Models are better on the timing, but still differ with the track of the trough. Will need to raised pops from the previous forecast, but keep them in the chance category to atone for any possible shift or timing changes. Max temperatures on Thursday to range from the lower to middle 50s north, middle to upper 50s south.

Thursday night and Friday . Precipitation chances could linger into at least Thursday evening before ending as the shortwave trough pulls east. Behind this system, a more typical October temperature regime will return to the region on northerly winds. 8H temperatures fall to or slightly below 0C Thursday night and remain there through Friday. The weather for Friday looks quiet as northeast WI to reside between the departed shortwave trough and the next shortwave trough dropping southeast into the northern Plains. Under a mix of sun and clouds, look for max temperatures on Friday to only reach the upper 40s to lower 50s north, lower to middle 50s south.

AVIATION. for 06Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1108 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

An upper-level trough axis will swing through northeast Wisconsin overnight into early Saturday morning. This will bring MVFR ceilings around 3kft to north-central WI, mainly impacting RHI. Farther east, down sloping winds will likely keep a scatterd sky in VFR category with around 4-5kft. Ridging will build in during the day Saturday, allowing for clearing skies and good flying conditions; although, west winds may gust to 20-25kts. Winds will decrease by Saturday evening.

GRB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. NONE.

SHORT TERM . Kieckbusch LONG TERM . Kallas AVIATION . Cooley
