Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 217 PM MDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SHORT TERM. Tonight through Saturday night . Dry conditions noted across the forecast area this afternoon. Ridging over the region will continue to bring dry conditions, with any moisture streaming north of the forecast area. Eyes remain on the approaching trough, which looks to approach the region on Friday. The system is still expected to split as it advances inland from the coast, with an area of low pressure forming along the south end of the system, and lagging behind the northern wave. The wave is expected to impact the northern portion of the forecast area on Friday, with mostly rain expected. The northern wave should be generally east of the forecast area on Friday night. The southern area of low pressure will impact eastern Oregon by Saturday morning, with the system progressing east into southwestern Idaho through Saturday night. Another round of seasonally warm temperatures expected on Friday, with cooling anticipated for Saturday.

LONG TERM. Sunday through Thursday . Better model agreement in indicating the weak closed low that is expected to be over SW Oregon early Sunday morning slowly drifting across the region into Monday. This at least brings a mention of a slight threat of showers over the higher terrain. In the meantime, an elongated upper ridge amplifies across the PacNW and then into the higher latitudes of British Columbia for the first part of the work week. At least for now there is good model agreement in having some energy undercut this ridge and move into the forecast region Monday night through Tuesday. Problem is the fact that this system is bumping up to still some weak ridging over the region. This may limit the threat or amount of precipitation Its not until midweek. (Wed-Thurs) that this weak ridge axis shifts east which allows more energy associated with the next system to move into the region. Snow levels expected to be at or above 7000 feet through a majority of the forecast period with near seasonal temperatures.

AVIATION. VFR as mainly high clouds expected to stream over the region. Surface winds: variable 10 kt or less, then southwest to southeast 5-15kt. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: Southwesterly 15-25 kt becoming W-SW by late Friday afternoon.

Weekend Outlook . VFR with periods of mid-level ceilings and mountain showers through Sunday. Local mountain obscuration possible Friday night. Surface winds generally 5-15kt with local higher gusts. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: becoming light and variable at less than 10kt.
