Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Burlington VT 1013 PM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. Scattered to numerous rain showers will persist through the evening before a cold front pushes this activity south overnight. Behind this front, drier weather is expected for Tuesday with slight below normal temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s. Continued unsettled weather will persist through the week with several chances for scattered precipitation, including some higher summit snow flurries towards mid-week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. As of 1009 PM EDT Monday . Scattered showers linger as a cold front continues to slowly sag southwards. Overall, best deep- layer moisture and cyclonic vorticity advection are shifting away from our area. So anticipate activity will continue to gradually diminish, but remain possible much of the night until we the surface front exits the region early tomorrow. Only slight tweaks were made to the going forecast. Have a great night!

Previous Discussion . Expect chances for rain to persist through the evening hours before another upstream shortwave pushes this boundary south of the area. Some partial clear is possible overnight, especially along and near the international border. Coldest overnight lows will be across this area including the higher terrain of northern NY with temps in the low to mid 40s (upper 30s for summits). This front will bisect Vermont overnight with mid/upper 50s likely from Addison and Orange Counties southward. By morning, winds will have turned out of the north which will advect in cooler and drier conditions for Tuesday. Highs will be slightly below seasonable lows in the upper 50s/low 60s with dewpoints dropping into the low 40s. Mostly clear skies and light winds should allow for a good drop off in temperatures Tuesday night. We'll finally see readings in the low to mid 30s for portions of the Dacks and NEK. Patchy valley frost is likely within these area. Elsewhere, lows will be in the low to mid 40s.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. As of 318 PM EDT Monday . The upper level low will dive south across the North Country on Wednesday with another shortwave rounding the western periphery of the upper level trough. The cold pool aloft underneath the 500 mb low will bring steep lapse rates to the region which will help support shower activity. These showers will peak during the afternoon hours with peak heating although plenty of clouds underneath the low will likely limit overall heating throughout the day. The addition of the shortwave energy will help provide some decent synoptic ascent which will again help invigorate shower activity during the afternoon hours. Given 850 mb temperatures dropping between 0 and -2 C late Wednesday, the threat for some very light mountain snow showers continues to look plausible but will likely be confined to the evening and overnight hours as temperatures will only be marginally conducive for the potential of light snow. No accumulation is expected given antecedent soil and ambient temperatures but it marks the change of seasons across the North Country.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. As of 318 PM EDT Monday . Another chance for diurnally driven rain showers will be seen on Thursday with steep mid-level lapse rates being the key driving factor. The upper level low will begin to slide eastward on Thursday but we will continue to remain within the upper level trough with northwest flow aloft. While most of Friday through Sunday will be on the dry side, low amplitude shortwaves are expected to push through the North Country and bring scattered rain showers to the region. Timing on these features remains in question as these low amplitude features are tough for global models to resolve but we will be able to refine the weekend forecast in the coming days. The overall outlook for the weekend remains promising but just be prepared for some scattered showers with no significant weather expected. Temperatures will remain around seasonal normals, or just slightly above, with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s and lows in the 30s and 40s.

AVIATION /02Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. Through 00Z Wednesday . Currently, flight conditions are a mix of MVFR and VFR, with occasional IFR in heavier showers, which will be near EFK through 02Z. Generally, VCSH expected through 05Z-08Z with a shower or two capable of visibilities between 2SM and 6SM. Ceilings are likely to lower towards 1200-2500ft agl as a front pushes south through 12Z. Cannot rule out the possibility for some IFR ceilings at MPV about 08Z-14Z, and anticipate IFR ceilings at SLK from 06Z-10Z. Southwest winds around 5 knots will become variable to northwest around 5 knots or less. After 12Z, aviation conditions should improve as clouds lift and scatter. Brief BR will be possible if skies clear any and winds remain light, but otherwise, lingering scattered clouds at 5000-6000 ft with some high clouds with northwest winds around 5 to 8 knots.

Outlook .

Tuesday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX. Wednesday: VFR. Slight chance SHRA. Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight chance SHRA. Thursday: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Slight chance SHRA. Thursday Night: VFR. Slight chance SHRA. Friday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Slight chance SHRA. Friday Night: VFR. NO SIG WX. Saturday: VFR. Slight chance SHRA.
