UPDATE. Issued at 1223 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Updated for the 18z aviation discussion below.

SHORT TERM. (Today through Friday) Issued at 348 AM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Today will be very similar to yesterday, with afternoon highs in the low 70s west of I-35 and upper 60s east of I-35. There will be no shortage of sunshine throughout the day.

Clouds will move in overnight Thursday as a trough enters the region. Rain chances begin in western MN early Friday morning. As the system moves eastward, the chance for rain increases, reaching the metro by late morning. By mid to late afternoon, the rain will be on its way out of our WI counties and the clouds will follow it. The rain and northwesterly flow, resulting in CAA, will cap our afternoon high temperatures on Friday in the lower 60s. Clear skies will allow for a chilly Friday night, with forecast lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s by Friday night. Partly cloudy skies are expected to the NE early Saturday, but no rain is anticipated.

LONG TERM. (Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 348 AM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

The only bit of sensible weather we will see for the period will be the first few hours from around 7pm-10pm Friday evening as showers exit the area from the system discussed in the short term. High pressure moves in behind large-scale ridging behind the departing system, bringing several days of sunshine and above normal temperatures into the weekend. Highs generally remain in the low to mid 70s with some 80s possible mainly along the Buffalo Ridge in SW MN. Precipitation chances largely remain absent as well, with the best chance for precip arriving towards the end of the period with the GFS bringing in a longwave trough which could end up dropping a wide area of rainfall, but that currently would lie beyond the typical 7 day extended and occur at the end of next week.

Low temperatures will likewise remain rather warm in the upper 40s to mid 50s through the entire period, meaning we likely won't see another day even remotely close to freezing until we get into October. The thing to watch as we go through the next few days will be to see how Thursday/Friday evolve next week, with rain chances possibly returning at that time, but we likely remain completely dry until then.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 1223 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

Another afternoon with generally light winds and VFR conditions. KAXN, KRWF and KMKT may see a few 12-20kt gusts through late afternoon. Overnight, clouds move in ahead of an approaching cold front with rain chances increasing into the morning hours. Added PROB30s for -SHRA for all sites with the exception of KEAU. Didn't want to add it to prevailing conditions just yet because precip is not necessarily a slam dunk at this point. Northwesterly winds become quite breezy for a short period behind the FROPA with cigs gradually improving for our western sites by the end of the period.

KMSP . Anticipate northwesterly winds to increase by mid morning with gusts of 20-25kts. Any -SHRA will be fairly short-lived and cigs improve after 21z or so.

/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/ SAT . VFR. Wind WNW 10-15kts. SUN . VFR. Wind SW 5-10kts. MON . VFR. Wind SW 5 kts.

MPX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MN . None. WI . None.
