Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 110 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. Low pressure will exit through the Canadian Maritimes overnight. A cold front will approach Monday, cross the region Monday night, then exit across the Gulf of Maine Tuesday. An upper level low will remain across the region Wednesday into Friday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. 1am update . Reduced lows for tonight by a few degrees, particularly in the North Woods.

9:15 PM Update: Much drier air continued to filter into the region this evening. Currently the sky is mostly clear across much of the FA, but mostly cloudy in the Saint John Valley. The clouds across the valley should lift out within the next hour. Upstream there are clouds in eastern Quebec, and some of these clouds will likely drift in from the west overnight with a clear to at times partly cloudy sky. By morning, most areas will be in the 40s, but low to mid 50s for the immediate coast. Loaded the past few hours of observed data and made some minor adjustments based on the expected conditions.

Previous discussion: Low pressure responsible for our heavy rain earlier today will continue to lift quickly northeast across the Canadian Maritimes this evening. A westerly flow of drier air both at the surface and aloft will move into the region later this evening. Expect partial clearing early this evening. A weak short wave will cross the area later tonight with some patchy clouds into the overnight hours. Otherwise, it will turn cooler than last night, with lows expected to fall into the mid to upper 40s north and upper 40s to around 50 Downeast. A cold front will approach the region on Monday and then begin to cross western portions of the area late Monday afternoon. Expect increasing clouds across northern areas on Monday with a chance of late afternoon showers, especially across the north and mountains. Across Downeast, expect partly sunny skies. High temperatures on Monday will be right around seasonal normals for this time of year, generally low to mid 60s across northern areas and mid to upper 60s Downeast.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. An upper level disturbance will cross northern Maine Monday night. At the surface, a cold front/trof will cross much of the region and approach the Downeast coast late. Expect a chance of showers across the region Monday night. The cold front/trof will exit across the Gulf of Maine Tuesday, with high pressure building toward the region late. Could still have a slight chance of showers early Tuesday Downeast with the exiting cold front/trof. Otherwise, expect generally partly sunny skies across the region Tuesday. Surface high pressure builds across the region Tuesday night, while an upper level low moves south toward northern Maine. Generally expect partly cloudy skies across the region Tuesday night, though clouds should begin to increase across northern areas late. The upper level low then settles south across the region Wednesday. With the cold pool aloft, expect mostly cloudy skies along with a chance of showers across the north and mountains Wednesday. Across Downeast areas, expect partly sunny/mostly cloudy skies along with the slight chance of an afternoon shower. Temperatures will be at below normal levels Tuesday/Wednesday.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/. The upper level low will remain across the region Wednesday night into Thursday. At the surface, low pressure will lift across the Maritimes with a trof extending back west across the forecast area. With support from the upper level low and convergence along the trof, expect a chance of showers will persist across the region Wednesday night into Thursday. The upper level low will capture the surface low Friday, with the vertically stacked system then slowly drifting east across the Maritimes through Saturday. However, how rapidly the system moves east is still uncertain. The proximity of the cold pool aloft with the upper low and moisture wrapping around the system will keep a slight chance/chance of showers across the region Friday into Saturday, with the better chances across northern and eastern areas. Otherwise, generally expect partly cloudy skies Friday into Saturday. High pressure should begin to build toward the region later Saturday into Sunday with decreasing shower chances. Temperatures will be at below normal levels Thursday through Saturday, with near normal level temperatures Sunday.

AVIATION /05Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. NEAR TERM: Patchy MVFR ceilings late this evening from KPQI north to KFVE with the best chance of MVFR at KFVE. Otherwise, VFR expected overnight and Monday. Can't rule out brief MVFR in any afternoon showers from KPQI north Mon PM. SW to W wind 5-10 kt overnight and S to SW wind around 10 kt Monday.

SHORT TERM: Monday night . VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers. Southwest winds 5 to 10 knots, becoming west/northwest.

Tuesday . VFR/MVFR. A chance of early showers Downeast. West/northwest winds 10 to 15 knots.

Tuesday night . Variable conditions with any patchy fog. Otherwise, VFR. Northwest/north winds 5 to 10 knots.

Wednesday . VFR/MVFR north with a chance of showers. VFR Downeast with the slight chance of an afternoon shower. Northwest/north winds around 10 knots.

Wednesday night through Thursday night . VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers. North/northwest winds around 10 knots through Thursday. Northwest/west winds 5 to 10 knots Thursday night.

Friday . VFR/MVFR. A slight chance of showers. Northwest/north winds 10 to 15 knots.

MARINE. NEAR TERM: Seas of 9 pm are running around 4 ft, mainly in 9-11 sec period swell. The wind/seas are expected to remain below small craft advisory levels and therefore have cancelled the advisory with this update.

SHORT TERM: Winds/seas will be below small craft advisory levels Monday night through Wednesday. Could have a chance of showers Monday night through early Tuesday.
