Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Portland OR 955 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

Updated short-term and aviation sections.

SYNOPSIS. A couple of weak fronts will move across the area into Thursday keeping light rain in the forecast. High pressure will build going into Friday bringing clear and dry conditions over the weekend.

SHORT TERM. THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT . Light rain/drizzle continues to taper across the area, with only a few hundredths of an inch observed in the higher terrain of the Coast Range and Cascades over the past hour. Some additional light reflectivities are being observed by the radar over the waters, but given its radar-estimated height AGL of ~10,000 ft it seems most likely to be an area of thick stratus/virga rather than precipitation echoes (which low-level water vapor imagery would also support). This still would indicate a slightly greater chance for rain in that area (should the dry layer below the 10,000 ft reflectivities moisten as precipitation continues to fall into it) and downwind of it. Chances for rain will be highest in higher terrain, where orographics will enhance uplift.

The next frontal system to arrive Wednesday morning will bring with it higher QPF across the entire forecast area. The moisture is associated with a frontal system with tropical origin that is moving north into the Gulf of Alaska. A weak shortwave will move through the warm sector of the parent low pushing rain into the Pacific NW early Wednesday morning. Rain will persist throughout the day and into Thursday morning as a slightly more defined front moves onshore Wednesday evening. Right now models have the heaviest period of rain occurring overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning. Upper level ridging will build Thursday bringing an end to the rain by Thursday evening. -BMuhlestein/Bumgardner

LONG TERM. FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY . Not much change in the extended as the bulk of the guidance points to NE Pacific ridging dominating the upper level pattern from Friday well into next week. This will promote drier than normal weather across the area through next week, with temperatures continuing to run near or slightly above seasonal norms. Temperatures aloft will be quite warm by January standards this weekend, with 850 temps pushing 12 C. This should support temperatures climbing well into the 50s along the coast this weekend. However, favorable conditions for valley fog and stratus will introduce a little more uncertainty into the temperature forecast for the interior lowlands. This is reflected in rather sizable NBM max temp interquartile ranges from the low 40s to the mid upper 50s from PDX down to EUG for Saturday and Sunday. The official forecast sticks closer to the mean with highs around 50 for now. Meanwhile, large scale subsidence and light winds will also favor another period of air stagnation issues in at least some valley locations from Friday onward. /CB

AVIATION. 06Z TAFs: A weak warm front pushing into the region with mainly light winds will result in predominantly LIFR, IFR and very low end MVFR conditions at all taf sites through 06z Thursday. Expect most locations to just vary between LIFR and IFR conditions It's going to be soupy in general. although perhaps there will be just enough southerly flow to keep conditions mainly in MVFR thresholds in KEUG and east winds will strengthen just enough in the Gorge on Wednesday to result in ceilings lifting into MVFR thresholds at KTTD.

For detailed regional Pac NW aviation weather information, go online to: https://weather.gov/zse

KPDX AND APPROACHES . A weak warm front pushing into the region with mainly light winds will result in predominantly LIFR and IFR conditions through 06z Thursday. /Neuman

MARINE. Weak high pressure will maintain light winds less than 10 kt through tonight. A warm front will move across the waters on Wednesday as southeast winds shift to become southwesterly by Wed night. Winds gradually increase through the day to around 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. A cold front then moves across the waters Thu morning, which may bring a few hours of wind gusts to 25 kt. Stronger high pressure will quickly build behind the front through Friday. Thermally induced low pressure along the northern California and southern Oregon coast will increase the northerly pressure gradient on Friday as north winds increase into the evening hours.

Relatively calm seas will continue as a westerly swell around 6 ft at 12 seconds gradually subsides to around 4 ft on Wed. A longer period westerly swell, with a period of around 14 to 16 seconds, moves in toward the middle of the week. Seas will build to around 7-8 ft by Thu afternoon, persisting into Friday. /DH
