Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 933 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

UPDATE. Issued at 933 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

1006mb surface low is along the north shore of Lk Erie, north of ERI. Back edge of the baroclinic leaf has cleared the west half of this forecast area. Widespread rain is preparing to exit the ne lower MI coast, while sct showers are lifting across eastern upper and far northern lower MI. Synoptically-forced precip will be concluding over the next 2-3 hours.

But, cooler air will filter in behind the departing low. 850mb temps will drop to +1 to +2C overnight, increasing overlake instability. A wnw 1000-850mb fetch will be quite light for most of the night, but increase a bit toward morning. We also have a couple of surface trofs that will work thru the area; one is contributing to the band of showers now seen off of MQT.

After a lull in precip, lake effect rain showers will gradually become a nuisance overnight. Given the weak wnw flow, precip coverage will be highest near the Lake MI coast, near and especially north of TVC - as well as across eastern upper MI.

Min temps mid to upper 40s.

NEAR TERM. (Through Tonight) Issued at 316 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

. Showers Across Some Areas Tonight .

High impact weather: None is expected.

Moisture out ahead of a short wave evident over northwest Wisconsin/eastern Minnesota will slowly increase into this evening. Forcing from this system in combination with surface low pressure over northern Ohio will attempt to overcome the very dry low level air currently in place across northern Michigan (surface dewpoints only in the mid and upper 40s) leading to increasing chances for rain showers through early tonight. Colder air then advects in late tonight increasing over lake instability. The cold air looks marginally cold enough (lake/850 mb delta ts in the mid teens) to produce west northwest flow lake effect rain showers (no snow yet) in favored locals of northwest lower and eastern upper overnight. Lows tonight in the mid and upper 40s. Light winds will pick up some out of the west northwest toward morning.

SHORT TERM. (Saturday through Monday) Issued at 316 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

High impact weather potential: None.

The forecast period begins with a trof extending from an area of low pressure over Hudson Bay through the Great Lakes region and a large area of high pressure centered over the Texas panhandle. This will put the forecast area in a northwest flow regime with a fairly tight pressure gradient and colder air filtering into the region. Winds will be gusting to around 25-30mph. 850mb temperatures forecast to be between 2C and -1C will produce some lake effect clouds and drizzle/light showers as lake temperatures seem to be running around 13-15C. The northwest flow regime locales will see the most clouds and precipitation . although not looking at too much in the form of QPF amounts. The winds do back a bit to the west-northwest Sunday, as will the locations of the most likely precipitation. The synoptic moisture begins to depart to the east throughout the day Sunday, but will probably be late Sunday with precipitation ending from southwest to northeast as a ridge of high pressure and associated dry air from the aforementioned high over Texas begins to push into the Great Lakes region. This will produce another nice fall day Monday with highs in the low to mid 60s, sunshine, but still a breezy light northwesterly wind.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid 50s Saturday and Sunday, although temperatures could warm a bit more Sunday if clouds depart earlier than forecast . with some locations nearing 60. Monday will be in the low to mid 60s, but the breezy northwesterly wind will make it feel more like the mid to upper 50s. Lows will be in the upper 30s to low 40s Saturday and Sunday night (higher along the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shorelines).

LONG TERM. (Monday night through Friday) Issued at 316 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

High pressure will continue to dominate northern Michigan's weather through early Wednesday . as precipitation chances return Wednesday afternoon. These precipitation chances will be from a developing system over the northern Great Plains trekking to the northwest, putting northern Michigan first in it's warm sector through Thursday and then veering winds behind the system bringing cooler air on the northwesterly winds. Precipitation chances will remain through the remainder of the long term forecast period and possibly beyond. Tuesday will be warm with the southerly flow ahead of the approaching system from the west, with some locations possibly seeing 70 degrees and may even again on Wednesday. Daytime temperatures will be about 20 degrees cooler by the end of the work week with the cooler air filtering in on northwesterly winds.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 727 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Low pressure over Lk Erie is contributing to shower activity over northern lower MI. These showers will diminish and exit this evening and early overnight. As colder air enters the region late tonight into Saturday, lake effect rain showers will develop off of Lake MI. There is a chance of occasional MVFR conditions (mainly cigs) with the lake effect showers on Saturday. Otherwise mostly VFR.

Light nw winds for much of tonight, increasing a bit toward morning and become gusty on Saturday.

MARINE. Issued at 316 PM EDT Fri Oct 15 2021

Light westerly winds for much of tonight will increase and become gusty out of the west northwest Saturday into Saturday evening. This will require small craft advisories across all zones. A few gale force gusts can not be ruled out. Meanwhile, there will be chances for rain showers through Sunday morning.

APX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. MI . NONE. LH . SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 8 AM to 11 PM EDT Saturday for LHZ345>349. LM . SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 8 AM to 11 PM EDT Saturday for LMZ323- 341-342-344>346. LS . SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 8 AM to 11 PM EDT Saturday for LSZ321- 322.
