Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 458 PM EDT Tue Oct 19 2021

SYNOPSIS. An upper level low will drift east across the Maritimes tonight through Wednesday. High pressure will ridge across the region Wednesday night then move east Thursday. Low pressure from the upper Great Lakes will approach Thursday night, then track through eastern Quebec on Friday and into the Maritimes Saturday into Sunday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. The upper level low will move from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia tonight, reaching Newfoundland Wednesday. A disturbance moving around the exiting upper low will move south across the region tonight through early Wednesday along with a surface trof. Expect mostly cloudy skies across the region tonight with isolated to scattered showers, with the better shower chances across northern and eastern areas. Isolated showers will remain possible across northern and eastern areas early Wednesday, possibly lingering across the north and mountains into the afternoon. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy skies across northern areas Wednesday. Across Downeast areas, expect mostly cloudy skies Wednesday morning then partly sunny skies during the afternoon. Low temperatures tonight will range from the upper 30s to around 40 north, to around 40 to the lower 40s Downeast. High temperatures Wednesday will range from around 50 to the mid 50s north, to the mid to upper 50s Downeast.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/. The upper flow becomes more west-southwest heading into Wednesday night. This results in warm advection in the 850H to 700H layer. Expect a partly cloudy to mainly cloudy night across the region. Surface low centered across Michigan will track east-northeast Thursday with a weak warm front lifting northeast across the region. Thursday will be a mostly cloudy day with a little light rain developing with the warm front. QPF amounts on Thursday will be generally one-tenth of an inch or less. The surface low will continue to track northeast Thursday night with a cold/occluded front tracking east toward the region. The front will cross the region Friday morning and reach the Downeast coast early Friday afternoon. Expect mainly cloudy skies Friday morning with a few showers possible early. Expect decreasing clouds later Friday afternoon with the passage of the front. Highs on Thursday will be near normal and then above normal levels Friday afternoon

LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. Cold advection can be expected Friday night in the wake of the frontal passage, along with drier air as higher pressure builds in from the west. There could be some radiational cooling if surface winds diminish, but for now, will not deviate significantly from NBM lows.

Saturday will be a much cooler day than Friday, as an upper low center remains to our northwest near the Ontario/Quebec border. There is still some uncertainty with the placement of this feature and an associated surface low over the western Atlantic toward the eastern Maritimes. For now, followed the NBM, which weights the highest pops (i e. 25 to 30%) across Downeast areas and the ME/NB border region Saturday afternoon through Saturday night. It will be cold enough Saturday night to not totally rule out some higher terrain snow showers.

Sunday will be an unseasonably cool and unsettled day with mainly cloudy skies and a least the slight chance of an afternoon shower with an upper low continuing to remain across the region. Expect generally fair but unseasonably cool weather through early next week.

AVIATION /21Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. NEAR TERM: VFR/MVFR conditions are expected across the north and mountains tonight through Wednesday. Isolated to scattered showers tonight, then isolated showers Wednesday. VFR conditions expected Downeast tonight through Wednesday. Isolated showers Downeast tonight through early Wednesday. West/northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots early tonight, decreasing to around 10 knots. West/northwest winds around 10 knots Wednesday.

SHORT TERM: Wed night thru Thu . MVFR cigs possible Aroostook County terminals later Wed night into Thu morning, otherwise VFR. Light and variable wind.

Thu night thru Fri . MVFR/IFR cigs possible due to low cigs/-rn, especially Aroostook county terminals, then VFR during the afternoon. SW wind 10 kt early becoming W 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon.

Fri night thru Sun . Mainly VFR but occasional MVFR cigs/isld shower. W to NW wind around 10 kt.

MARINE. NEAR TERM: A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for much of the waters, with the exception of the intracoastal waters, through 10 PM for wind gusts up to 25 knots. A few gusts up to 25 knots are possible on the intracoastal waters early tonight. Winds/seas are then expected to be below small craft advisory levels on all the waters later tonight through Wednesday. Isolated showers possible tonight through early Wednesday.

SHORT TERM: Winds/seas will remain below SCA levels Wednesday night through Thursday, then possibly to near SCA levels Thursday night into Friday.

CAR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ME . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 10 PM EDT this evening for ANZ050- 051.
