LMZ261 Expires:202201191015;;601145 FZUS63 KMKX 190222 GLFLM OPEN LAKE FORECAST for Lake Michigan National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 822 PM CST Tue Jan 18 2022 FOR WATERS BEYOND FIVE NAUTICAL MILES OF SHORE ON Lake Michigan. Waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will occasionally be encountered. .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure around 29.4 inches over western Lake Superior will continue to move east across the lake overnight and into eastern Ontario. Gusty southwest winds will continue this evening, then veer west to northwest with the passage of an Arctic cold front. A Gale Warning remains in effect for the Lake Michigan open waters overnight and across the northern half of the lake through Wednesday morning, for Gale force gusts of 35 to 40 knots. Arctic high pressure around 30.7 inches will then move from the northern Plains into the Great Lakes Region later in the week. Cold air behind the passing Arctic front will increase the threat for freezing spray. The winds will diminish Wednesday night into Thursday as the high pressure area sags south across the central U.S. The next chance for strong winds across Lake Michigan will be Friday night into Saturday as another cold front passes through the western Great Lakes. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Marquette MI 1128 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

SHORT TERM. (This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 314 PM EST TUE JAN 18 2022

Upper air pattern consists of a shortwave over south central Canada this afternoon that will move through the area this evening and another on Wed as a 500 mb trough digs into the upper Great Lakes. 850-500 mb q-vector convergence moves through this afternoon along with deeper moisture and then moves out tonight. Temperatures will be falling aloft tonight, so lake enhancement will be ending and going over to lake effect snow after 06z when the deep moisture moves out. Have this covered in the forecast already and heavier system snow is starting to move out across the west. Overall, did not make too many changes to the going forecast.

LONG TERM. (Wednesday night through Tuesday) Issued at 426 PM EST TUE JAN 18 2022

LES and colder temps define the extended period. A general ridging pattern over the West Coast and troughing pattern east of the Rockies should keep snowfall chances limited to LES (mainly from the NW wind belts) and a Clipper shortwave or two. It is also expected that another Arctic airmass will move south over us this weekend and remain through early next week due to the troughing pattern remaining over the eastern US. Therefore, dangerously cold wind chills could be seen late this week into early next week, especially in the far west.

Expect LES in the NW wind lake effect snow belts to continue Wednesday night into Thursday as delta-Ts in the low to mid 20s remain across the area. Not expecting all that much snowfall; maybe a couple inches across the NW wind lake effect snow belts as sector plating processes and dry air should limit snow totals Wednesday night through Thursday night. There could be visibility issues at spots due to the sector plated snowfall being fine and 'dust-like'. As warmer air and ridging move into the area Thursday night, expect the LES to switch to the west snow belts before ending in the east Friday morning. As the Arctic airmass remains over us late this week, expect dangerously cold wind chills are possible, especially over the interior and far west; wind chills over there are expected to get to around -25F Thursday and Friday morning. Therefore, get any vulnerable plants and animals ready, and bundle up Thursday and Friday morning.

Ridging Friday should bring pleasanter weather over us, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs getting into the teens. However, expect this nicer weather to end Friday night, as a cold front moves into the area. The cold front, with a Clipper shortwave attached to it, is expected to bring light snowfall across the area. Not really expecting any big impacts from this system snowfall. Behind the front, expect the LES machine to start up again as delta- Ts fall into the low 20s. Expect LES to be mainly over the NW wind lake effect wind belts again late this weekend into early next week. A reinforcing shot of cold air is expected sometime next week behind a Clipper low that should just pass to the south of us over the IA, WI, IL area.

Colder than normal temps are expected with this second Arctic airmass, and dangerous wind chills could be seen across the area because of it. Wind chills would likely be lowest after the passage of the reinforcing cold shot early next week. This situation will need further monitoring.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night) Issued at 1119 PM EST TUE JAN 18 2022

Overall, MVFR cigs will be the prevailing category through this TAF period at all three terminals, although KCMX will be teetering on the IFR cig line. As for visbys, those look a bit more pessimistic on Wednesday as LES dominates across portions of the U.P. Expect breezy Wrly winds overnight becoming NWrly to NNWrly by around daylight Wednesday, eventually slackening Wednesday evening. The winds will also be a contributing factor for reduced visbys as it causes SN to blow around.

MARINE. (For the 4 PM Lake Superior forecast issuance) Issued at 314 PM EST TUE JAN 18 2022

Southerly gales to 40 knots will quickly become northwest to 45 knots tonight into Wed as colder air moves across the area. This will bring heavy freezing spray across the lake. With NW winds of 20 to 30 knots and arctic air remaining in place Wednesday night into Thursday, expect freezing spray to continue through at least Thursday afternoon. SW gales to 40 knots are possible Fri afternoon and night across all of Lake Superior again. Another shot of arctic air will move across the lake this weekend.
