Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 1006 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

UPDATE. Issued at 1005 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

Current forecast remains on track. Remaining fog across southern portions of the CWA will quickly burn off as diurnal heating ramps up over the next few hours. A jet max embedded on the backside of troughing centered over Quebec will dig across the eastern Great Lakes today, bringing mid-level moisture and associated cloud cover into the region for a short time this morning/afternoon. Otherwise, sunny/clear skies are expected through the remainder of the period as high pressure sits overhead. Highs will reach near 70 for most with temperatures a few degrees cooler along the immediate lakeshores, mainly along Lake Huron where light NE low-level flow will advect air from over the upper-50s lake surface temps inland. Once again, efficient radiational cooling with no cloud cover and calm winds at night will lead to chilly lows and patchy fog for some areas, especially early Wednesday morning.

NEAR TERM. (Today through Tonight) Issued at 257 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

High Impact Weather Potential . none.

1015mb high pressure is centered over central upper MI, will drift into lower MI thru tonight. This is just in advance of a sharpening 500mb ridge axis edging from the northern plains to upper MS Valley. A shortwave will dive into the northern/eastern lakes area today; the associated cloud cover is nearing northern Superior. The best forcing/moisture will miss us to the ne today, though not by a lot. Partly cloudy skies can be expected today in eastern upper MI thru mid afternoon, before clearing takes place. Elsewhere, outside of morning fog, mostly sunny conditions are expected. A dry airmass remains in place tonight, resulting in another night of mostly clear skies, and patchy overnight fog.

Max temps today mid 60s to around 70f, coolest very near Lk Huron. Min temps tonight likely not quite as this morning, ranging thru the 40s.

SHORT TERM. (Wednesday through Thursday) Issued at 257 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

. Quiet weather continues .

High impact weather potential: None expected

Synopsis/Pattern: Anomalously strong ridging will extend from the Gulf of Mexico up through Hudson Bay as an omega block slowly moves east across the CONUS through midweek. This ridging is quite strong (+2 to 3 St. Dev through Ontario and even +3 to 4 St. Dev through eastern Nunavut!) Surface high pressure will strengthen and extend into the Great Lakes from the north, leading to quiet and sunny conditions. Highs will be above normal with seasonably cool lows. Thursday will be a near repeat of Wednesday except for light winds consolidating a bit out of the east thanks to the surface ridge shifting into the lower Great Lakes. This will bump afternoon highs down a couple degrees for areas closer to the rapidly cooling Lake Huron.

LONG TERM. (Thursday night through Monday) Issued at 257 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

High impact weather potential: Minimal

Late week the eastern cutoff low over New England remains steadfast while the upper level flow becomes impacted by a kicker shortwave heading onshore in British Columbia. Energy within the longwave Rockies troughing starts to break up as it gets squished between the incoming wave and ridging over the Great Lakes. Said ridging starts to dampen over us on Friday. This is when the upper level pattern starts to get quite convoluted, with little run-to-run and intermodel consistency. Strength and placement of energy hitting the ridge remains questionable, but the overall consensus is that the ridge continues to flatten through the weekend, and a new cutoff low starts to form over the northern Plains by early next week. At some point late in the weekend a surface low tries to trek near the Great Lakes. Even though considerable uncertainty remains for the details, couldn't argue with the low chance pops through much of the extended. Temperatures look to cool through the weekend to near normal by early next week.

AVIATION. (For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 632 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

Morning fog PLN/MBL.

High pressure is centered over eastern upper MI early this morning. Light winds and (earlier) clear skies have contributed to patchy fog and stratus. APN earlier had an MVFR cig for a period, but that cloud deck has slipped south, and should not return. No issues at TVC. mbL and PLN have both had IFR to LIFR conditions at times early this morning, and that remains possible for another 1-3 hours before the sun erodes shallow fog. Otherwise VFR and quiet, at least until overnight tonight, when fog/stratus will again form.

Light winds.

MARINE. Issued at 257 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

High pressure will drift from central upper MI to lower MI thru tonight, providing light winds and minimal wave action. A bit of an easterly breeze will increase by Wed night and Thursday, as high pressure strengthens to our north.
