Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 226 PM MDT Thu Oct 21 2021

DISCUSSION. Tonight through Friday Night .

Weak (and insignificant) shortwave is moving thru eastern MT as ridge begins to build in from the west. This upper level ridge will be the dominant feature over the next 36 hours, bringing us dry weather and above normal temperatures. A few locations are touching 70F today, and we should see more of that Friday west of Miles City and Broadus.

There is a risk of localized valley fog near the Dakotas border late tonight into early tomorrow, per light winds, clearing skies and boundary layer moisture that appears sufficient.

Ridge axis will shift east as Pacific wave lifts into western MT Friday night. This may bring showers to our western mountains after midnight, and should increase sky cover overall.

JKL

Saturday through Thursday .

High pressure will be moving out of the area on Saturday as a series of shortwaves begin moving through the region on Sunday. High temperatures will start off in the mid-to-upper 50s for most of the area - upper 40s west of Big Timber - before a brief warm up into the lower 60s on Monday. Ensembles are generally in good agreement of a deep upper trough moving into the region by Monday night into Tuesday. Precipitation chances will increase in the southwest mountains, especially southwest facing slopes. Snow levels will generally remain above 6000 feet. Tuesday into Wednesday, the focus shifts to wind as a strong westerly jet sets up over the Pacific Northwest and into Montana. Confidence is increasing for strong gusts across the western foothills before high pressure builds back in on Thursday.

Behringer

AVIATION.

VFR conditions will prevail through the forecast period with occasional mid and high clouds. There is a small risk of localized valley fog near the Dakotas border late tonight and early Friday . potentially impacting KBHK. Look for surface winds to gust to 15-25 kts at times along the western foothills. JKL
