Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 1223 PM CDT Tue Sep 28 2021

DISCUSSION. (Today through Monday) Issued at 420 AM CDT Tue Sep 28 2021

Summary: Continued dry with above normal temperatures before rain chances return late week and linger through the weekend with temperatures trending cooler.

High pressure was in place across the Great Lakes this morning. An area of fog and low ceilings developed over the Twin Ports and up the North Shore with winds off the lake, but winds have slowly been becoming more southerly as the ridge axis shifts to the east. This should help clear this fog and low stratus out over the next few hours leaving mostly sunny skies for the bulk of Tuesday. Dry conditions are expected to persist for Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures remain above normal.

Upper level ridging will remain in place into Thursday with low pressure over the northeast CONUS and a longwave trough working through the Rockies. This trough, along with southerly flow around the periphery of high pressure stretching from the Great Lakes into the Southeast, will lead to a disorganized area of showers and storms stretching across the Plains states starting Wednesday. The trough then looks to deamplify by late week as the ridge becomes suppressed and upper flow turns more zonal over the weekend. Surface low pressure looks to develop across the Plains Thursday into Friday and move very slowly northeastward. Rain chances in the Northland will increase on Thursday and linger through the weekend and into early next week as an upper low becomes cutoff to our north. Rainfall totals do not look too impressive at this point and not much is expected in terms of storms either. Temperatures are expected to begin moderating Friday with near normal temperatures expected by the end of the period.

AVIATION. (For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1214 PM CDT Tue Sep 28 2021

Earlier fog has lifted bringing VFR conditions across all terminals. Winds will be out of the south around 10 knots with gusts to 15-20 knots through the early evening Winds again will be out of the northeast over the head of the lake bringing any fog that develops inland. Given a similar pattern that happened this morning, helped increase confidence and have added IFR ceiling and visibilities for DLH. There is some hint that it could make it all the way to HIB, but confidence is low therefore have left out of the TAFs for now.

MARINE. Issued at 1002 AM CDT Tue Sep 28 2021

Winds will be mainly out of the northeast at 5 to 10 knots increasing this evening to 10 to 15 knots. Waves initially will be less than 1 foot increasing to 1 to 2 feet. Winds will continue to be out of the northeast through Wednesday still at 10 to 15 knots with waves 1 to 3 feet.
