Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 425 PM MST Sun Jan 16 2022

. Update to Aviation .

SYNOPSIS.

Winds increase this evening and through the overnight hours across the plains of Central and North Central Montana. Temperatures remain above normal on Monday ahead of a cold front, which will drop south from Canada and across the region Monday night and through the day on Tuesday. Areas of light snow are expected Tuesday, followed by colder temperatures on Wednesday.

DISCUSSION.

Fair and seasonally mild conditions prevail today as an upper level ridge drifts across the region. Satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies, except for some persistent stratus lifting over the Northern Rockies. At the surface, a lee side low is beginning to organize over souther Alberta. All of these conditions hint at the expected increase in winds tonight for the Northern Rocky Mountain Front. A fast-moving shortwave in the northwesterly flow aloft crosses North-central Montana on Monday. This will result in a period of higher winds, expanding across the region through Monday evening. Winds speeds are forecast to be in the 50-65kt range at/above ridgetop levels, but the passage of the shortwave trough will help mix momentum from the stronger winds downward to produce wind gusts of 40-50 mph for most areas, and up to 70 mph in the wind prone locations along and adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Front. A High Wind Warning is now posted tonight through Monday to address the potential for some wind- related hazards to travel or outdoor work. The downslope winds will help maintain mild temperatures. Even in southwest Montana, temperatures are expected to climb above average, into the mid 40s.

Winds decrease Monday evening, but attention turns to a strong cold front arriving from Canada. Snow will develop first over the Northern Rockies, but then spread across North-central through Central Montana later Monday night into Tuesday. The front will bring a shift to gusty northwest winds, followed by falling temperatures for most areas through the day Tuesday. As the northwesterly winds deepen, expect to see locally enhancement of snowfall along the north and eastward aspects adjacent to mountain areas, where snowfall amounts of up to 2" are possible for most areas, with higher amounts over the mountains of central and north-central Montana. In addition to snowfall, wind chill temperatures could become a hazard for those involved in early calving operations. The most likely area to see wind-chill values below -20F will be in northern Hill and Blaine counties. Winter weather and/or wind chill advisories are likely to be posted to address these hazards. PN

Wednesday through next Sunday . Temperatures remain below average on Wednesday, with snow showers continuing over the Southwest mountains. Temperatures across the region are expected to slowly warm through the remainder of the week. A fast moving shortwave sliding east across the Western CONUS/Canada Thursday night and through the day on Friday will bring another chance for a precipitation to most of the CWA, especially to the mountains. - Moldan

AVIATION. 425 PM MST Sun Jan 16 2022 (17/00Z TAF period)

Brisk northwest flow aloft will bring variable mid and high level clouds to Montana for widespread VFR conditions tonight through Monday evening. Biggest concern during this forecast period will be increasingly strong and gusty winds at the surface and aloft. Areas of low level wind shear are expected at times with persistent mountain wave turbulence in the lee of the Rocky Mountains. Any precipitation will remain confined to the mountains along the Continental Divide with obscurations likely through the period. mpj
