Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 536 PM CST Tue Nov 30 2021

DISCUSSION. (This evening through Monday) Issued at 446 PM CST Tue Nov 30 2021

Summary: A shortwave system will bring snow showers across the area tonight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of the North Shore. Periodic chances of precipitation will continue for the next week, with a cold snap over the weekend.

A shortwave will bring another round of frozen precipitation to the region tonight into Wednesday. Due to advection of dry air aloft into the back end system, some slight chances for freezing rain among the snow showers is possible, but the main form of precipitation should be snow. No accumulations of ice are expected, but roads could still be slick for the morning commute from frozen precipitation, especially for our southern zones. Currently, areas further south should see a trace of snow, while areas in northern Minnesota and far northern Wisconsin could see up to two inches of snow from this system. Along the North Shore, southerly flow in the lower atmosphere could enhance snowfall both from local terrain and lake effects. These areas could see snow up to 4 inches, and a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for overnight into Wednesday morning.

Wednesday night into Thursday, an upper level trough with a strong surface low will move east through Ontario. Small shortwaves in the westerly flow south of the system could bring scattered light snow showers across the area. It seems that most of the snowfall should be north of the Canadian border, but certainty is still high on where these showers could fall.

The largest system of the week is expected to come this weekend. A deep upper level trough will move east through the upper Midwest and pass to the south of our area. The highest amounts of QPF are expected to fall over the CWA, which could lead to widespread snowfall. Models are surprisingly in good agreement for being so far out, but are subject to change. This system will be watched closely. Behind the low, cold air aloft will move south over the area, and we could see much lower temperatures by this time next week.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Wednesday evening) Issued at 536 PM CST Tue Nov 30 2021

VFR conditions will continue until a shortwave will move through the area tonight bringing some light snow showers to the area. Low MVFR to IFR ceilings are expected with the precipitation and should linger after as well until mid afternoon Wednesday as the system starts to move out. Visibilities could also lower to IFR conditions with local heavier bands of snow. High winds aloft from a tight pressure gradient around the surface low indicates a threat for low level wind shear tomorrow evening across most of the terminals.

MARINE. Issued at 446 PM CST Tue Nov 30 2021

Winds are continuing to decrease throughout the evening. Gusts up to 25 kts over the Apostle Islands should continue into tonight before tapering off after midnight. Mixed precipitation is expected over the lake tonight as a low pressure system moves through the Northland. Winds will shift to the southwest overnight before increasing again after the system passes, and more small crafts near the Apostle Islands may be needed tomorrow morning. Wind gusts are marginal, with values near 22 kts, so model runs overnight may reveal more certainty. Tomorrow night, however, small craft advisories will likely be needed across portions of western Lake Superior, just brushing gale gusts. Winds should decrease below 20 kts by Thursday night.
