Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 756 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

SYNOPSIS. A ridge of high pressure remains the dominant feature near the region this weekend for mostly dry weather along with prevalent night and morning fog. A series of weak weather systems will reach the area early next week, but significant impacts are not expected.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. The Tsunami Advisory for the North and Central Washington Coast, Strait of Juan de Fuca coast and San Juan Islands was cancelled late this afternoon. No tsunami danger presently exists for this area.

Meanwhile, western WA remains socked in with fog due to light winds and very poor mixing. Visibilities in the interior will be down to 1/4 mile or less at times through Sunday morning - a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect. 33

Previous discussion . A building upper ridge over the region along with light surface winds will again be the ideal recipe for widespread, and locally dense, fog across the lowlands tonight into Sunday morning. The ridge will weaken on Sunday in response to a system moving into the British Columbia, but models have been trending drier with each run. It appears that most of Western Washington finish Sunday on the dry side. A dissipating front will reach the area Monday night into Tuesday, but QPF looks very light. What little snow falls in the mountains from it should be above most of the passes. Temperatures through the short term are expected to run near normal.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. Model ensembles are in relatively good agreement with bringing another average looking frontal system into the area Wednesday night and Thursday with modest QPF. After that point in time, both deterministic runs and ensembles are suggesting that upper ridging will amplify along the West Coast with a drier period of weather possible as we round out next week. 27

AVIATION. Widespread fog continues across the region with most TAF sites reporting either IFR or LIFR conditions. Given most recent trends, expect fog to persist across the region into Sunday for continued low cigs and visibilities. Gradual improvement will be possible late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon. The flow aloft remains W/NW. Surface winds will remain light and variable, generally at 6 kts or less.

KSEA . Given current trends, expect fog and its resulting lower cigs and visibilities to persist into Sunday. Surface winds will remain light, at 6 kts or less. Gradual improvement to cigs and visibilities possible between 20-22Z Sunday. 33/14

MARINE. High pressure will remain situated across the coastal waters through the weekend, which will keep winds light across the area waters. A series of weak systems will then traverse the region next week.

Current observations this afternoon still show widespread fog across the marine waters. Given current trends, do not expect much in the way of improvement in visibilities across the waters today as fog looks likely to persist into Sunday morning.

Seas will hover between 10 to 12 feet today along the coast, before gradually subsiding to 7 to 9 feet Sunday. Small craft advisories remain in effect for the coastal waters, the West Entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and for the Grays Harbor Bar. 14

HYDROLOGY. The Skokomish River at Potlach has fallen below flood stage, with the flood warning ending this afternoon. No additional river flooding is expected through the next week.

SEW WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. WA . Dense Fog Advisory until noon PST Sunday for Admiralty Inlet Area-Bellevue and Vicinity-Bremerton and Vicinity-East Puget Sound Lowlands-Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca-Everett and Vicinity-Hood Canal Area-Seattle and Vicinity-Southwest Interior-Tacoma Area.
